View Full Version : No sound in my shiney new divx file

There is a high probability that I am just a moron, but I just encoded my first divx file ever using Gknot, vdub, azid, and lame. I followed the guide posted on this website to the letter. That one turned out to not have any sound, because I later discovered I had not specified an AC3 file in under the Audio 1 tab at the end just before adding it to the job queue.

Okay, easy enough... I specified the AC3 file to use, hit encode, and the Azid window popped up and everything seemed okay. But wait... under the "encode" window of gknot, I can see the job progress, and after azid completed successfully, I get this message in the log:

ERROR: Will not re-calculate bitrate. Transcoding Failed. Maybe you can add audio later.
ERROR: MP3-file-size is Zero! Transcoding Failed.

The file is still encoding as we speak, so it will be interesting to see if I get sound. I'm guessing no. I know that I had the "re-calculate bit rate" box checked. What am I doing wrong. (please don't say read the guide, cause I've read every word in it many times before coming here)...

If Azid or Lame crash, you'll end up with no mp3.
Don't panic! You won't need to re-encode your video. Just the audio. To rerun both Azid and Lame:
Start Gknot, click on Encoder tab
Click Add Job button
click Audio 1 tab
re-encode your audio
Now, before doing all this you may want to look through your GKnot log file to see if it was Azid or Lame that had the problem. A "0 second" run time may tell you. I've screwed up Lame by mistyping "--alt-preset" as "--alt -preset" and that will skip creating the MP3. I've also failed with "--alt-preset" because it's a Lame 3.9 parameter, and I'd neglected to install 3.91 per Doom9's instructions. Others have had missing dlls. The reason may vary.

So there could be lots of reasons.

Once you've figured out what went wrong -- and, if it's a parameter, you can always use the Gknot defaults to see if that might be why -- and you've created the MP3... you can just interleave your MP3 and AVI in Nandub. (Doom9 has a guide for that, as -- unlike many posters -- you already know.)
