Sector Error when trying to copy a SVCD

Hi there,

I'm always getting Sector Errors when trying to copy a SVCD to HDD or a direct-copy ...

It runs perfectly in my stand-alone and in my software-DVD-Player.
But errors in the MPG-File while trying to copy it.

Who can tell me, how to copy them?

Try CloneCD on it.
Set it to ignore errors. You need a decent CDROM drive for that task. I prefer Plextor. It will take a looooong (i mean it!) time. The only problem is you will get a copy with the same errors.

It's because they are burned in Mode 2. They have less (i think nearly none) error protection. That's why you can burn 800 MB of MPEG2 data to a 700 MB disc. The additional room normally used for error protection is used for data instead. For the DVD player that is not important, cause the MPEG stream is fault tolerant. For the copy program, that tries to read 'correct' data this error is unrecoverable, so it complains.

Hi there,

as Uli mentioned the SVCD is written in Mode2/2352 that means instead of 2048 bytes per sector that are used with a data CD the additional 304 bytes (usually used for error correction data) are also used for video data so indeed a 80 min CD can hold about 807,5 MB of SVCD data.

If you now try to copy the MPEG from the "MPEG2" directory to your harddrive by using Windows Explorer for example then windows will read the file wrong (it only reads 2048 byte from a sector) because it handles it as a data CD. If you want to do a disc-to-disc copy with CloneCD the reading of SubChannel data must be selected and don't correct SubChannel data for the writing.

To extract such a SVCD-MPEG stream to your HD you have to use a tool like "Isobuster" or "WinISO" and do an extraction in 2352 byte mode with them (but please don't ask me about those tools in detail - i only read about that issue somewhere else and just report it here) ;)

You could also use the vcdimager tools. Vcdxrip to extract the mpeg streams and a xml file. Create a new image with vcdxbuild and burn the resulting image.

I haven't used it yet but I believe vcdgear was created just for this task.

I currently burn vcd but the mode issue applies as well. I almost wish that you could burn (s)vcds in mode1 as an option and loss some duration length and still be compliant.

I am concerned about this though. I like to think I can make backups of my vcds in the future, but I've read a few stories where it plays perfect in their standalone players but can't copy without errors.

He mentioned it was a new svcd. If you burn a (s)vcd and immediately try to copy it, would you still get these errors? I would think mode2 is more suceptible to mishandling but if it's just been burned, I'm curious if it would still happen.

It makes me feel that when I'm burning a vcd, I should also burn some mode1 mpeg backups, but then sometimes the file is not going to fit in mode1.

Anyone copy a (s)vcd thats a few years old and not in the best condition? If so with what reader?

I think I read somewhere that this doesn't apply to dvds. Do they have the extra level of error correction?

Remember:

Not every empty CDR is without faults. If you burn it without error protection, even a newly burnt CD has the error, if the empty CDR already had it. No way to recover that one, if you haven't got the original MPEG. Sorry, but that's life...

yes, it works ... but it works with nero, too.

my mainproblem is that ISObuster shows 2048 bytes only.

in the disc-image AND on the original CD.

but they should be 2353, I have read
