MPG to mkv/mp4

I have some home videos in .MPG format. I want to Archive them in MKV or MP4 format with best possible quality .please suggest good software and setting for encoding.or should i wait for h.265 to come in famous encoders like vidcoder, hybrid. please see attachment for media info.

If you want "best" quality from your source, just demux the video and audio and remux it with mkvtoolnix. Don't re-encode it.
