...This is my guide on how to put together a DVD backing up your original DVD. First we are going to take a look at the process from the approach that you only want the movie and the menu, none of the extras.

Programs needed
1. Smart Ripper
2. Ifo Edit
3. Vobrator
4. Spruce Up
5. Prassi PrimoDVD or Stomp Recordnow Max

Step 1:

First we rip the movie with Smart Ripper. After loading the movie into SmartRipper, chose just the movie for this first step. Next click on Streaam Processing. Check the Enable Stream Processing box. Uncheck all the streams besides the M2V and the AC3 6 channel. Then highlight each of those and check stream to extra file. Then start ripping. (It is a good idea to go into the destination folder and check to make sure a .m2v and a .ac3 file are being made. All other files it may create can be disguarded.)

Step 2:

Next we are going to rename the files so they have the same name in the same directory. For example Fast.m2v and Fast.ac3.

Next open up SpruceUp and go to file -> Import and Import your M2V file. The ac3 will automatically load once the M2V is loaded. Once both are loaded you can click on the film strip icon and then double click on the movie and it will come up in a separate window. Then you can check to make sure it was loaded ok

Next you make a crappy little menu (you wont be using this menu, just the real one. You will see later). Click on the tree button (two to the left of the filmstrip) and then click on a menu background and then place a button on it. (the buttons are the tab in between the background and the film.) Right click on the button then go to movies > name of it > Chapter 1, click on that.

Now to check if it works click on the #2 on the bottom left portion of the screen and simulate it, again you can see if the movie is right. The little CD on the bottom should be green, which means you can export the file. For this click on #3 and then click on advanced. You are going to change output to: DISC IMAGE, uncheck everything in the advanced portion, and then give the image file a name such as fast.img like I did. You are going to have to save the file, and if you don’t it will automatically come up and ask you to save it. The point of this was not to get the disc image but rather the files in a Video_TS folder which is automatically created when the image is burnt. This may be longer than other methods but I have had the best success with this. So we click on WRITE and let it do its own thing.

When SpruceUp is done creating the image it will say image created successfully. Sometimes the title of the window is error and sometimes it is SpruceUp. When it says error that means it created an image which has nothing in it. This does not matter to us because we do not want to make the image. Of course if you wanted to just burn the file with your own menu, create a menu in the step where we just put anything on for a menu. I usually play the movie and take the title screen as an image. You can do this when you bring up the movie to test it.

Step 3:

Now we are going to go back to using SmartRipper and grab a few more files. Open up SmartRipper with the movie loaded and click on files. We want the movie Vob that is #0. Generally when you click on files it will come up with the movie files already checked. And normally we want the three files directly on top of those. VTS_0#_0.VOB, VTS_0#_0.IFO, VTS_0#_0.BUP. So uncheck the movie files and check those three. Then click start. After this is done you can open up VOBrator to make sure it is the menu, but every time I have backed up a movie this is where the file was located.

Now we basically have everything we need, but we need to put it together in the right folder. What we just did was we got the original menu from the movie. Now we are going to connect it with our movie.

Step 4:

First find the three files you just ripped and rename them to be VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP, and leave the folder with those files in it open. Then go into MY Computer and find the SpruceUp working folder. Find the three files named VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP, and either move them or delete them. Then highlight your new files with those names that we just ripped in the other folder and drag them into your VIDEO_TS folder. Next we open up IfoEdit and open the Video_ts.ifo file from your VIDEO_TS folder. Click get VTS sectors and run it for all files, now everything is all pieced together and ready to burn.

Step 5:

We are almost done, we are onto burning the movie. I personally burn with apple media because I think it works the best for $5. But I’m not going to preach for you to use anything. You can use whatever it is that you want. Ok open up Stomp or Prassi and close the wizard. On the tool bar click on the icon with a disc with folders in front of it for a DATA disc. The right click on the grid area and add files or folders. Add your VIDEO_TS folder and make sure it is capitalized. Also you must add an empty AUDIO_TS for compliance purposes. Then put the speed on 1x or 2x you have a compatible disc, make sure the red arrow is pointed at the correct drive and burn. (I am writing this guide from a separate computer than my burner is on, this is the reason why the red arrow is pointed at a CD-R/W drive

And now your finished. Hope it works as well for you as it has for me, thanks for reading. Any further questions IM me at anfonee1 on AOL messenger.

interesting.....

couldn't you avoid using spruceup.

rip
ifoedit
move original video_ts.ifo,vob,bup to rip directory
get vts sectors.

don't see why spruceup is needed.

would like to hear if you've tried this method?
