So...yeah...how close are we to being able to play Blu-rays (off the disc) in, say, MPC-HC with an external codec? I really do not want to have to install bloated software to play Blu-rays or decrypt them and play them straight off my HDD. Is this/will this be possible? Sorry if this is in the wrong section/has been posted before.

You still need something to decrypt them, but it can be done straight from the disc. What's lacking is the menu playback(I think a few will work with libbluray or whatever it's called), but playing directly from the files or playlist work from the disc if you have a decryption software installed(dvdfab passkey is free for decrypting the disc for playback only) works perfectly fine.

You can check out this filter i've been working on for the past year

The directshow part is pretty much done.
HDMV menus are 90% supported, I think it's only button animations and a few other small things that are missing.
Java menus maybe 30-40% work

Thanks. This works great with MPC-HC. There aren't any menus but everything has chapters and the movie is still fully viewable.
EDIT: Hmmm, while this allows me to play the discs in MPC-HC, it only works properly for movies. If I try to play a special features disc, it doesn't work very well at all. It will only play one section (it played a 13min part where the whole disc has over two hours of footage). I'll assume that this is because there's no menu support? If so, is there a way I can get the menus in MPC-HC? (I use lav filters and madvr).

Sorry but I don't know how to get this to work in MPC-HC =/ - I tried opening two different blurays and it gave me some hr error code (I'm going to assume it's because the discs are encrypted).
Can't wait for when I can just download a filter/codec and put it into MPC-HC (just like madvr, lav filters etc...) and then be able to play any blu-ray, with menu support (how far away is this by the way?).

Your best bet is what dukey linked to. Read the thread, figure out how it works since that's exactly what you're describing that you want(except for the any part which is not quite there yet, but it will be eventually or be pretty close I believe).
If you can play it the way I described then it's not encrypted.
Edit: After looking at it in a bit more detail, it's not quite there yet since the mpc dev still need to add support for it.
