Which dvd burner to get?
HP SureStore DVD100i Internal:
DVD+RW 2,4X / DVD-R 8X / CD 32X / CD-R 12X / CD-RW 10X / IDE
Pioneer DVR-A03:
DVD-RW 1X / DVD-R 2X / CD-R 8X / CD-RW 4X / IDE
The hp seems like a much better buy when talking speeds. What what is fact? I have two Pioneer DVD players: 515 and 646A. I also have a Afreey LD-2060. Will they play any media burned with either of burners?
Apple DVD-R 4,7GB media kit (5-Pack) is the cheapest media available in my country at the moment. Will it work with both burners?
Thanks

My advice to you is stay with the pioneer. THe +R(w)'s just hit the market, and only time will tell how compatible they are. THe pioneer has been out for at least 8 months now, and is fairly refined.
+R media is not even available yet, and from what i've read, these drives won't even be able to do +R media, even with a firmware update (notice, nowhere in the specs do they even mention +R). Further, +RW media is fairly expensive as compared to -R.
As for media compatibility, +RW is not compatible with -RW, (and same for the +R/-R). So your $5 apple media WILL NOT work in the HP.
I notice the local stores, BB, CC, etc, are all starting to carry this +RW crap, and the pioneers are harder to find locally, but BB still does carry it. Most sales droids at such retail outfits want to get rid of what they have in stock NOW, rather than help you hunt around for what you're actually looking for, and will tell you whatever it takes to make the sale. Most unimformed consumers fall into this trap. I almost did myself as well, but had the resources of several sites (this one included) to know better.
APple media works great @2x, and the $2 extra per disc you pay is good insurance I think to know that it will work in a vast majority of players that the generic may not.
My 2¢ worth. Might want to come on to IRC #pcdvd and #dvdr for info.

how does the +r differ from the -r?

My personal opinion is is to get the panasonic 310 since it does does dvdr's and dvd rams. It burns at 1X, but that is the recomended speed for perfect video. I have had no problems with this drive, and it works with ANY dvdr or ram. It will burn a dvdr and make it readable on ANY player! From Apex to Zeenith! HP or Pioneer can't garuntee that. Can they.

Viper, 1X is preferred for what reason?
I thought as long as you used 2x certified media, it was a nonissue.

viper3344,
i have the panasonic 310 RAMBO drive (doesn't do dvd-rw's though) external.
i then got the A03 so i could test on dvd-rw's. i use this to create final dvd-r. still have both installed. the external RAMBO seems to rip faster, but only burns at 1x. pioneer A03 rips slower, but burns brand name media at 2x. but i use meritline.com discs (generic).....
wonder if i should switch back to burning on the external RAMBO?

The pioneer is cheaper than the hp. Almost $100.
I thought that the +rw -rw thing was a typo. Didn't know that they were incompatible formats.
Where can I read about this?

Considering the panasonic is $100 cheaper then the pioneer and 200 cheaper then the HP it's a great buy. I don't know about you, but I'm not one of those guys that will sit in front of my computer for 45min and clap my hands while my dvd burns. I usially do about one a day, so a 20min difference means jack to me. And for that 2X media. Try and burn pearl harbour. Youll see what I mean after that.

Sure, reading the specs on the panasonic, it does look like a good
deal. However, its $300USD (pricewatch) cheapest. The A03 couldbe had for $350.
Anyways, cost of media must be weighed in at this time. DVD-R's are relatively cheap, but what about dvd-rw's and DVD-RAM disks...
How playable are dvd-rams in regular stand alone table top units?
DVD-RAM capacity does go up to 9.4G.. Is such media available NOW. What about its cost...
So many factors to consider.. better to sit back and wait :)

I couldn't care less about DVD-RAM. Cannot be played in any standalone (except Sampo clones with drive replacement).
Panasonic LF-D321E costs $ 150 more than the Pioneer. And so what if it burns faster. I hear that anything about 1x speed gives you problems on a range of players, resulting in unplayable discs or mpeg errors in the stream. Still ordering the Pioneer I guess!?
Thanks for your input
