View Full Version : 1080p or 720p movies on 22" monitor?

I watch movies on my PC, and have a 22" monitor (LG W2240)
which has a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

I was just wondering, is the difference in quality noticeable
between 1080p and 720p movies on this monitor?

only you would know... play the same clip at both resolutions and decide for yourself.

Ok, thanks.

I asked this because I read somewhere that 1080p movies are recommended for large monitors.
It seems to me that 22" monitor size is small for 1080p resolution.

Or does monitor size not make a difference?

You are not the only one who thinks so :)

IMHO 22-inches is the "ideal size" for 1280x800.
The problem is, no manufacturer (AFAIK) produces 22-inch LCD monitors with a native resolution of 1280x800. :(

Indeed. I have a 24" (23.5 actually) and I have to set the DPI scale in Windows to 125% to be readable. Anything below is too small. I'd say 1080p is ideal for 32", maybe 27" at least. In my 24" display there's no apparent difference between 720/1080 unless I stick very close or go specifically looking for details. And I never tried anything at 27", as here there's very little difference in price between that and 32". Maybe I'm blind or something, but that's how I see it :o

It depends on the actual effective resolution of the source, what scalers are being used, your seating distance, your visual acuity, and ambient light.

I don't like 1080p at anything larger than a 24". A 27" at 1440p seems perfect for Windows.

I have a 1080p 21.5" and I think 1080p video does look better than 720p on it. I notice 1080p looks a bit sharper/crisper but given a better quality encode 720p can look better (often the case when streaming). I must admit I have not watched a lot of video on the 21.5", it is my server's monitor for when Remote Desktop doesn't work.

You may want to add a bit of sharpening for the 720p encode after the downscaling -- e.g. sharpen (0.12) -- to recover the original "crispiness".
