View Full Version : BD-RB Processing 720x480i VC-1 extras?

I've hit a snag while using BD-RB to compress the Blu-ray of "Sphere" (1998 Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson):

The primary movie (00013.M2TS) is VC-1 1920x1080 - and presents no problem for conversion to .M2TS.

The format of the extras (00016.M2TS) is VC-1 720x480i - and generates an h264 error.

Is there a specific setting or a workaround that will overcome this problem?

Hi! AppData\Local\Temp\WER1615.tmp.version.txt

Hmmm. What printed that out and makes you say that is an error?

Don,

When BD-RB aborts because it's apparently not been able to convert the 720x480i VC-1 .M2TS to H.264 (at any resolution and framerate) , it generates two simultaneous MS Windows-captioned error messages. The first one states (in part) that "H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) encoder has stopped working", while the second one states (in part) "View details" accompanied by a down arrow. Clicking on the down arrow brought rise to the mysterious (to me) AppData\Local\Temp\WER1615.tmp.version.txt
AppData\Local\Temp\WER2552.tmp.appcompat.txt
AppData\Local\Temp\WER25FF.tmp.mdmp BTW - Good to hear from you ;>}

I recall that QUITE some time ago, the problem of INTERLACED VC-1 was posted about and, IIRC, a solution was rendered. Unfortunately, I've thusfar been unable to locate that information...

Can you post your log? There has been issues with VC-1 interlaced sources in the past (I saw it in an extra on "Band of Brothers"). It's specific to those that are field based. I found that converting the .VC1 file to an MKV before encoding fixes it -- so BD-RB scans the .VC1 file to look for that indicator and does an automatic MKV conversion before encoding. If I remember correctly I think it was a bug in HAALI and is related to DirectshowSource, but it's been a while and I'm not positive.

I found that converting the .VC1 file to an MKV before encoding fixes it

Yes, that works, Jerry, but from what I can figure, that only works on single files. The "Sphere" disc contains one VC-1 file for the entire movie at 1920x1080 that BD-RB processes normally and without error - but there are an approximate dozen additional files (extras, etc.) that are VC-1 720x480i. (Admittedly, only one or two appear to be significant extras, but I'm sure you'd want to fix it properly, so that the entire disc can be processed as a full Blu-ray disc [menus, extras] etc. by BD-RB)

As far as I know DGDecNV handles interlaced VC-1 correctly. Have you tried that with BDRB?

It could be that I've missed the MKV conversion when the LAVF flag is set. Again, it's been a long time, but I seem to vaguely remember (right or wrong) that LAV doesn't support interlaced VC1 or has issues with fields... I know I tried it back when I was looking for a solution to this (and ended up using MKV conversion).

The 1080 source is progressive.

It really doesn't matter how many there are -- BD-RB should do the MKV conversion on them individually as a part of the encode process. You will see "Converting field-based or secondary stream" show in the information window when it is happening.

It could be that I've missed the MKV conversion when the LAVF flag is set.Nope, the primary movie (VC-1 NOT interlaced) generates an immediate error if I don't select LAVF (and, therefore, use the Default Direct Show Source).

Perhaps you'll come upon the "Sphere" Blu-ray and possibly resolve this. If not, life goes on ;>} I don't know if I've ever seen another Blu-ray that has both progressive VC-1 files and interlaced VC-1 files on the same disc...

I am re-encoding my copy of the movie Sphere, while trying to use your settings. Using directshow which is presently doing the main movie. Will try lavf later.

Thank you both for your insight - you "gonca" for making the effort to duplicate my problem and you, "jdobbs" for hitting the nail on the head. Uninstalling and reinstalling FFDShow (and the Haali/Matroska splitter) resolved my issue.

Again, thank you ;>}
