When watching a movie at low volume one would normally need both an eq for proper loudness correction and dynamic range compression to make quieter parts understandable. However these are interacting and therefore complicating this issue.
I am interested both in a workable easy compromise solution and the theoretical background.
Assuming that we know both the reference level of the movie and the playback level doing proper loudness correction just by applying the difference of the correct equal loudness curve should be easy.
If we apply drc after that we will screw everything up again though, however this should at least be better than without lc since at least the input for the compressor is correct and what happens does so anyway with or without lc.
If we apply drc first we will screw up everything first and I guess we should do the following:
So if I understand right one should constantly measure the gain reduction of the compressor and dynamically apply a loudness correction which compensates for that shift, too.
Are there some papers about interaction of compression and eq concerning spectral/tonal balance?
Is there some software which has compression with spectral/tonal balance or loudness compensation build in?
PS Pardon my english. :o
