View Full Version : Movie only Backup to DVD5?

I have made two Backups to DVD5 and have noticed that The first backup did not play on one of my BluRay Players but did play on another.
Both times when I was patching the index.bdmv file with AVCHD Patcher It showed an error.
On the second Backup I also noticed I had no certificate folder.
I must have done something wrong?

patching the index.bdmv file qualifies as preprocessing and bugreports cannot be accepted due to that. Bugreports MUST be done using non-modified original sources.

In setup check strict avchd and DO NOT patch anything with avchd patcher or anything else for that matter. Just make sure you check that setting and try again.

Thanks Gonca. Was not sure wether I needed to patch it or not, will try again.

Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure I was making a mistake that is why I did not put this post in the bugs thread.

Did as you had suggested Gonca and selected Strict avchd and did not patch anything. Burned again to a new dvd5 disk and same issue. I have a Sony BDP-S370 that plays everything, the other a Samsung BD-C5500 only plays the BD-R and not the Taiyo-Yuden -R DVD5.
Not sure if it is just that the Samsung BD-C5500 just won't play it??
Here is what the Samsung is supposed to play:
Blu ray video, BD-R/RE, DVD video, DVD/DVD +/-R, DVD +/- RW, CD/CD-R/CD-RW, USB storage
Try using a BD-RE for the back up amd see if that works. There is a possibility that it wont play AVCHD on DVD media

Just found a BD-RE. Will give it a try tomorrow and post back.
Thanks Gonca.
Use the image for the DVD5. Burn that image to BD-RE. Just the image that you have now
what is the vbv-maxrate and vbv-bufsize for your encode? These must both be below 15000
QB
When strict avchd is set, BD-RB follows the AVCHD spec. So the bitrates should be fine. Blusky's player might support avchd but I don't think it supports it on DVD media.

Gonca and QBhd,
I did burn the DVD5 image onto a BD-RE and it did play in the Samsung BD player. The Taiyo-Yuden -R DVD5 will not play in the Samsung. Strict avch was set.
Interesting enough I played a movie last night on the Samsung and it seemed to freeze at intervals and sometimes up to a second. I did try the disk on the other BD player and it had no problems.
With the same disk I then tried to see if it would freeze on the same seen in the video and it would not so it was not the disk.
Thanks.
If it is a Samsung Player that can't play the disc (I had thought it was the Sony that could not play it), try removing the AUXDATA folder before burning (and make sure Imgburn does not add it, there is a setting that adds folders for BluRay structure). It may not be the cause, but I have seen it before with Sammy's.

QB It has already been established that it is the DISC that is the problem, not the content. The Samsung player doesn't like the Taiyo-Yuden -R. Removing the AUXDATA will have no impact (it plays on the BD-RE with it). I have that player, and I always use +R's. I've never tried a -R.

Thanks Jdobbs. I came to the same conclusion. I'm also having freezing problems on this Samsung player. This player is on my Home theater setup so I am thinking of replacing it with a BD Player that will play most media and of course does not freeze.

One thing to watch... if it seems to be freezing at the half-way point on a BD-9 or near the end of a movie on a BD-5 -- you may want to shorten the default size for those two. Many discs get flaky when you get to the outer edges. I've seen that myself, even on quality discs, and I changed my personal default size for BD-9 to 7500 instead of 8032 (which already has a little factor for bad edges and encoding inaccuracies built in). Typically you'd use the custom size setting, but here's an undocumented hidden setting for you:
BD9_SIZE=7500
I've hesitated to publish it, because too many people with increase it and blame me when they get oversizes or edge-of-disc errors.

I totally understand what you mean. Although I have not played with Bd-9 yet I will keep it in mind. Thanks for the hidden setting.

Good to know Jdobbs. If I get freezing at the whale way point or near the end of a movie these can be adjusted also. Great. Will do a few more test with the Samsung Blu-Ray player to see if this is the case.
Interesting when I tried it several times with same move and disk it froze at different points in the movie. I will keep trying till I figure it out.
Thanks Jdobbs.

You may also want to burn with VERIFY checked. There are a lot of flaky discs out there.

Thanks Jdobbs , will do . I did try the same disk in different Bd players and it played fine so this leads me to believe its the Samsung Bd player.
I will leave VERIFY so if I do get a bad disk it should tell me.
Thanks again.

Verify won't catch all problems. Some players don't like some discs, or types of discs, while other players will be happy with them. Verify can't tell you this. But if verify DOES catch an error then it means that the info read from the disc doesn't match what was supposed to be written to the disc. If a disc can't write and read perfectly in the same drive then you can be assured that the burn is no good. The fault could be with the disc or the drive, but the burn is no good.
Passing the verify process doesn't guarantee it will play in all players; it's more of a minimum requirement, in my book.

I can tell you that from my experience I have never had a playback issue on a disc that was verified. Every time I've noticed an issue (especially on the outer surface) with that specific player (Samsung BD-C5500), it is on a disc that I forgot to verify. When I go back and check it -- there is a bad sector.
But I have also noticed that that player is very sensitive to fingerprints.
It is true, though, that some players just don't like some brands or types (+-R) of discs.

Thanks for the info Jdobbs. I have already set ImGburn to verify. I went and looked at the DVD5 disk I was using and I made a mistake it is a Taiyo Yuden but a DVD-R not +R.
As far as fingerprints I have read on some forums that a little bit of soap and water and a lint free cloth does the trick on cleaning them. I have a couple of more movies I have to backup this weekend I will give them a try and see how the Samsung BD-C5500 does and see if there is some kind of a trend so I can further isolate the cause.
Thanks for your help.

Jdobbs, you hit the nail on the head. Just burned a movie onto a TDK Dvd+R and it worked perfect on the Samsung. So it does not like the either the DVD-R or the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R.
The Sony BR Player , BDP-S370 plays everything. I will see if I can get a hold of another brand DVD-R and see if it plays.
Thanks Jdobbs, you called it perfectly.

honestly, i wouldn't do that. If you've got 2 brands of -r that don't work. Why spend cash on a 3rd with the same potential of not working. There's 2 things i'd do. 1 check the manual if urs even supports -r (and ifso, if there are any specific brands mentioned) and 2. Stick with +R media but upgrade the quality. TDK (+R or not) is still a crappy brand. Try verbatim +R or Tayo Yuden +r

Thanks ch3vr0n,
I have only tried one brand of DVD-R and that is Tayo Yuden. I did check the manual and it does say that the Samsung BD-5500 does play -R media.
The TDK DVD+R media I used was purchased at least 3 years ago and I will not purchase anymore -R media to test because as you expressed is a waist of money.
I have looked at several sites and it seems that peeps are saying that the quality of the Tayo Yuden DVD has gone down. I think I will try the Verbatim this time and see how it goes. Thanks.

I did another reincode with BD Rebuilder and everything looks fine. This time I burned it to a Verbatim BD25.
When I played it in the Samsung BD-5500 I did get some freezing in chapter 8. I tried it several times and it froze in the same spot. I then tried it on the Sony BDP-S370 Blu-Ray player and it worked fine. So it looks like the Samsung BD-5500 is having issues. I burned it with ImgBurn and I did select verify, it had no errors.

I am going to replace the Samsung BD-5500 since it is tied to my home theatre .
I want to luck around for a good Blu-Ray player that can play most media.
So far this is the one I am looking at:
LG BP620
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just remember that ANY new standalone player that you purchase will include Cinavia detection code. Your old player may not, so it might still be of some use to you.

that's only if that player dates after feb 1st, 2012. So if he manages to find a player that predates that date, while technically it'll be a "new" player it'll still be old enough not to need cinavia.

Thanks RobertM and Ch3vr0n for the info. So far I am leaning toward the Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player. I can only find them used but they do not have the Cinavia Virus on them and will never have it because the licensing did not require it. So no worries about firmware updates.
This player will play AVCHD format as long as there is no menu System(Movie only)??
Any comments ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My question is, is there any way to make an AVCHD DVD 5 but not just with film, if not quite the opposite with the menus and extras.
It is sometimes I burn the blu ray to DVD extras and I did it the other day and came out as a data DVD.
Thank you.

I don't think so. My understanding is that the menu structure for BD is not compatible with the DVD format, so you can't use the BD menu elements to build a DVD menu. The program would have to deconstruct the entire menu structure and rebuild a new one from scratch.

OK, thanks, there are programs that do AVCHD with several MSTS (AVCHD Coder) but of course, the make a menu, does the same as the original.

Thank you.You can do a full backup to AVCHD DVD-5 with no problem. Just select full backup and BD-5 for output. If there is a lot of content, though, the quality could suffer. A full backup to DVD-5 is a time that the "Highest" quality setting is appropriate.
You will need a Blu-Ray player that supports AVCHD to play it back.
AVCHD supports the HDMV menu structure -- which is used on the majority of blu-ray discs. If, however, the original uses JAVA you will end up with a disc that isn't fully compliant with AVCHD (but... most players will play it).
I've done lots of full backups to dual layer (BD-9) discs.

Thank you, non-equal I have understood correctly, I am Spanish and I use the translator.
Isn't all the blu ray, just pass the extras, the film delete it. Days ago I did the test, I only removed the film and leave the menu and extras, I selected DVD 5 and came out perfect on the computer, but then I put this in the play3 and wasn't an AVCHD if not a blu ray, then detect it as a data DVD not as AVCHD.
