I have noticed that VLC seem to give strange colour artifacts when playing back my raw capture files.....

The colour flicks and changes around all over the screen, any idea what might cause this issue. Im sure this never used to happen in the past when i used to use VLC?

Could be an update in the codec you used(which you haven't specified unless you really are using really really REALLY huge uncompressed video) that's not fully compatible with its decoding counterpart in VLC.
I'd say make sure you're using the latest version of both and see if it still happen.

VLC use its own internal codecs to decode video. It might be the codec you used to capture your video that changed.
It might also be an unsupported colorspace issue or something, it's hard to tell when you don't specify any info about the video source.

It seems that VLC has a problem with lagarith video in the YUV colorspace which hasn't been fixed yet: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/7375
You should switch to the RGB colorspace or even better, you should use another lossless codec(like UT (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143624) which has multithreaded decoding or FFDShow's FFV1 which compress pretty well) anyway since you often read that lagarith sometimes has corruption problems(It may or may not have been fixed, I have no idea).

Notice UT gives 4 instance when looking at my codec list, ULRA, ULRG, ULY0 and ULY2. Whats the difference between these 4?

Check the "List of FourCC" in the readme: http://umezawa.dyndns.info/archive/utvideo/utvideo-12.0.1-readme.en.html
ULY2 use the same colorspace internally that you were using with Lagarith.
