Super-wide music videos?

I'm starting to wonder what the reason for having for either filming or editing to a super wide resolution for music videos or any other fottage for that matter is when no screen available today is that wide. Is it to hide the boom microphones from the frame?

Nope, it's really just because someone thinks it looks cool and movie-like. It's become an easy shorthand for "this video has high production values!" - like 25p over 50i, deep focus and the like.
