I've recently been going through and re-doing a bunch of movies that I've bought, converting them all over to x264, AAC audio, etc, using Handbrake both to save space and have consistency. Part way through I discovered that the MP4 container doesn't support PGS subtitles so I recoded a few things as MKVs instead to add soft subs when multiple languages were present.
Since then, I've changed my mind and decided to convert from PGS to VobSub so I can keep everything with the MP4 container. So I've extracted the streams, converted the subs and merged it all back together using MP4Box (via My MP4Box GUI).
Problem is these new files just don't work like the old ones do. With the old files I could comfortably assign them properties via the Windows Explorer and they'd work just fine. These new ones work just fine after I've created them, but will cause every player I have to either refuse to play the file or crash in the event I change even a single property (the error seems to be coming from the audio).
The only work-around I've found so far is to record them as Flat files, which doesn't seem to be the same as what Handbrake outputs. Granted that they work this way, my intention is to eventually offload them to a NAS and these Flat files seem very sensitive to disc access times (potential issue with multiple people reading from it at the same time) while the Handbrake-made files have no problem; or at least less of a problem.
Since I'm also expecting to have to break a few more open for noise reduction, I'm hoping to solve this problem before I get that far.
So, what exactly am I doing wrong with MP4Box to make it incompatible with the Windows Properties system, and how can I fix it without using Flat storage?
The only real differences I can personally see between MediaInfo results is that the Codec ID on the Flat video (and I assume the others) is iosm (MP4Box) instead of mp42 (Handbrake), and the Format profile is Version 2 on the working one.
