What is a decent compression choice for mkv from blu-ray? I wish to retain 1920x1080 with best quality for size. I use a flash drive with wd player to play.

If you select and set CRF to 18 you'll get virtually identical results to the original (in terms of quality), but the size, while generally smaller than the original, is pretty large. A setting of 20-23 is a pretty good compromise. It's also pretty fast, since you only do one pass. CRF is nice, in that it gives you a specific quality level -- but it's output size will deviate depending upon the complexity of the source.

Using movie only with MKV output.
Output custom 23500MB
Automatic Quality Settings

I'm more interest in quality than size, as I play from portable hard drive with WD box.

What should I use for decent audio?

I always recommend DD 5.1@640kbs.

Sorry about all the questions, but I really use this thing!:)

How do I set CRF to 18 and how do I set DD 5.1@640kbs?

I'm trying to get best quality/best audio for WD box.

Select Mode, Alternate Movie-Only Output, select MKV Container, 1920x1080 , 640kbs, DD5.1, check Constant Rate Factor Output and change the set value to 18.

I always use a CRF of 20 and select 1920x1080 (Intact Audio). looking at a group of 300 movies done this way, the final sizes range from around 9gb to 12gb.

In all honesty, I find that the setting for 1280x720 with DD5.1 is undistinguishable from the 1920x1080 for 99% of the movies I've compared and the size requirement drops down to the 5-8gb range.

I connect my WD TV to a home server with 96TB of space (38TB free) just for movies. I have plenty of space, so I don't worry about size.

But what size screen are you watching this on?
