I have a question regarding importing Mp3 ABR audio stream in AVI container using Virtualdub.

Audio specs:
LAME3.99r - -m j -V 4 -q 2 -lowpass 17 --abr 128

Software: VirtualDub 1.9.11 (build 32842)

When importing the audio i get this window:

Is it best to leave the option at the default setting (autodetect) or i should manually set it to CBR
which is according to the pop up window (also suitable for ABR encodings)

Thanx in advance

It depends. Software players have no problems with (properly-muxed) VBR audio in AVI. Hardware players can be picky, and you should run some tests on your SAP before making a decision. :)

I have and what works fine with ABR Mp3 audio is when using Nandub 1.0rc2 (build 1853).

Here's whats bothering me:

1) nandub hasn't been updated since 2001.

2) It only offers the option to import VBR mp3 audio and i'm using ABR.
It has worked fine in the past, i would just like to know if it is recommended to keep using nandub's VBR option or switch to virtualdub.

ABR is VBR.

ABR is VBR.

Why does virtualdub, as seen in the screen I posted in the first post, offer 2 different options to choose for ABR and VBR audio streams?
Selecting either one of them makes no difference and ensures SAP compatibility?

Oh, I didn't notice VirtualDub's description. Still, ABR is just a type of VBR, i.e. the bitrate is variable. I'd probably leave it at autodetect but to be honest I don't know in what way they are stored differently. That said, pretty much any player nowadays supports VBR mp3 in AVI just fine. People were just using things like Nandub or VirtualDubMod for that because the original VirtualDub did not support it at the time yet.

Thanx for taking the time to help, i'll leave it to the default setting "autodetect" and i'll test in my SAP.
If i get OOS issues i'll switch back to nandub.

If i'm not wrong, since i use "direct stream copy" for both audio and video the audio/video streams are identical regardless the software used (vdub or nandub), right?
