I'm not sure when it happened, but I recently discovered that the Xbox360 now finally plays H264 MP4's with the original 5.1AC3 audio muxed into the file.
I wanted to see what the playback was like via the Media Centre extender for a video I'd converted, and like the fool I am, my fingers went into autopilot on the remote and I attempted to play via the dashboard video player. Shockingly it worked!
I've tried 2 Xboxes, and (now) tons of different video files and they've all worked on both.
The only difference to my setup since the last time I tried (after the last major dashboard overhaul) is that the PC I'm streaming the files from is now a Windows 8 one. Not sure what, if any, difference it makes... but frankly I'm just pleased that I can finally get the best quality video to play on my 360 without having to forfeit 5.1 audio.
