OK after about 50 bucks worth of Best Buys rip off 10 buck dvdr's and many aganizing night screwing around with nero and ifo edit I finally made an easy ass way to make a 1:1 copy of a dvd contianing the main movie and have it work on all 9 settop dvd players I tested it with!!
So this is for all you guys that don't want to fuck with nero and all that other 'set it up first' rules BS. Once you get the hand of it it will take you about an hour to do the whole thing (depending on the speed of your burner)
Her-goes

1. Use Smartripper to rip ---
1) The main movie vobs (smartripper chooses)
2) And the main movie iso and bub
(video_0X_XX.ifo and .bub)
Only the one for the main movie!
DONT RIP THE VIDEO_TS's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Make sure the rip is in a folder called c:\DVD

3. Load ifoedit. Load ifo you ripped from c:\DVD. This is the weard part. Even if the movie is less then then 4.7GB you need to strip something to re do the vobu files. (I tried it with different movies! You need to strip something and let ifoedit do it's vobu thingy) trust me on this one!

4. Get to the stripping screen (VOB extras button) and choose strip vob id's and create new ifo's.

5. Still in this screen enter the destination folder c:\video_ts but don't change the default file name. Hit go, pick what you want to strip and on the next screen keep all the vob id's.

6. Go do something. No, really go do something, a girlfriend perhaps;) because this is going to take a little while. On my Athlon XP 1900+ (1.6Ghz) it takes about 20 min to do a 2 hour movie.

7. !!!!When it stops in the middle and says no video_ts found, tell your computer to screw off and hit OK. This is what we want.

8.When you are done load the new iso from c:\video_ts. But wait......there is 2. Notice it created a video_ts.ifo!! and you should have your other ifo.

9. load the video_ts.ifo. Hit 'Get VTS Sectors'. It will prompt you that it will save it. cool.

10. Now, load your other ifo file. Again hit 'Get vts Sectors'. It will save automatically, but just to be safe I always hit the save button anyway.

11. With your ifo still loaded, hit the create image button. Go ahead and save it in c:\video_ts. You can choose to burn it now but keep in mind your burner has to be drive M. You can change it in 98 through device manager, but not 2000 or XP. If you can, your done!
If not............

12. Just make an image in c:\video_ts. Now you can use any dvd authoring program that reads images to burn it. It will automatically create the right folders and make a perfect dvd! Keep in mind that some progrmas will require you to change the extension from .img to .iso, but that can be done through windows. DONE! Enjoy

my goal is to make the most least diffucult step by step guide. The only reason I took this approach is because I couldn't get nero to work! (yes I tried everything -UDF, V. 6.0.8.4) But if any can cut any courners, please respond. Also respond if the guide worked for you. thanks guys and a special thanks to Derrow and doom9. Respond if you guys have any questions. :D :D :D

hmm... did exactly what your "guide" says...
and I woked but not 100%.

I can play the movie on my Pioneer DVD-535 stand alone player!
I can switch the audio-tracks and it changes :-)
I can switch the subttitle-tracks... AND... nothing happens!!!
well, of course my player tells me he changed from subtitle one
to subtitle two... (english/german). but the subtitle is ALWAYS english!!!

so, what's wrong??? I tried about 5 times. with different settings.
maybe it's the movie (hey dude, where's my car, code2)

ou, I forgot that I can change the subtitles on my pc (powerDVD XP) very well...

I will try another movie soon...

if the movie is less than 4.7 gb's why don't you just make a .iso file with dvd decryptor then burn it with any burning program...the making of the iso takes like 25 minutes, and burning takes however long it takes.

so i don't understand the point of your guide... 4.7 gb movie = dvd-5...thus it can be burned to a dvdr...so why rip something!?

Question #1 - Don't go the path of rempeg! I striped a 7.00GB movie to 4.3GB by taking out subtitles and the spanish dubbing. The problem with re-mpeg is that there are very few dvd authoring programs that will read m2v AND AC3 audio or m2c and wave. The only ones that do, suck.(DVDit PE) Just strip. Only have the launguage you speak and unless your deff, get rid of about 800mb's worth of subs.

Question #2 - I had this problem with a couple of movies. But, I then realized that it worked on an apex and not a tosheba. I think it has to do with the way the sub pics are compressed. I'll look into it and write back soon.

Question #3 - this may be true, but the past 14 movies I did, were about 5-7 GB. (Pearl Harbour, Gladiator, swordfish) this Guide is only FOR the dvd's that are over 4.7GB. It's the quickest simplest way to do it!

Viper,

I was reading your method and have some questions.

What does your method accomplish that can't be accomplished by using ifoedit to strip/rip the entire movie with angle processing turned on (if its multi angle movie), or, without angle processing.

If I have a movie that I want to strip/rip, whose m2v,main ac3, and sub titles total less than 4,7G I use ifoedit to strip these from the already ripped dvd contents (on teh hd already). I specify all the options except remux and rebuild pts, and angle processing as needed.

The output contains all the needed files to play/burn the movie, including the video_ts.* files.

If anything, your method will allow creation of an iso image to burn with another program, but I don't see what other benefits there are... Please enlighten.

PS.. I've read too many horror stories with burning compliant dvd-r's using nero. It seems to be pot luck with it, even if all the options are properly set. I've been using Prassi Primodvd, and so far out of 5, 5 have been successful :)

PS.1 For movies greater than 4.7, you either chop it up so that it fits onto 1 dvdr, OR, you reauthor using 2 dvdr's. Following the doom9 guide for movies over 4.7G while keeping menus has been unsuccessful here.

If I'm going to split a 6G movie to 2 dvdr's, i might as well reauthor it, and put 2 or 3 endings (from diff movies) onto that 2nd disc.

All of these assume you dont want to rempeg.

Really the only point to my guide is to have a guide for the newbies. Yes, you can just use dvd decrypter for movies under 4.7gb and yes, if you do some other steps you can keep subs and angles, but the piont is to put a movie (>4.7GB) on a dvd-r that will always work on a standalone. (hense the stripe what you want part)If you want to keep the piontless menues and make the movie on two dvdr's then you might as well go buy it for about $10.00 more then what you pay and put into time wise. this is for the people that have the cheap dvd-r's and want to put there $400 dvd burner to some practicle use and just have a movie.

I havn't had luck with Nero either. It seems to write the entire disc but then not close it. The end product can't be read by anything. All of my options are set as per http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/nero.html
Prassi has worked well for me though, too.

I'm a very Newbie, and I'm going to try your method. I've only attempted one DVD so far, and it was unsuccessful. I feel like I've tried this 100 different ways.

My first question is, on you step 11, you state that my burner has to be on drive 'M'. Why? I have XP, and my burner is drive 'F'. Not gonna work?

Second question is have is concerning ripping. MANY people say that they are ripping movies and they are under 4.7Gb. You even stated that you ripped a 7Gb DVD down to <4.3 by taking out the audio and subs. I have been trying to back-up What Women Want, and it's only appr 6.5Gb to start with. After I rip it (have done it in DVDdecrypter and SmartRipper), it still totals >5.5Gb with video and AC3. What am I missing??

Thanks for any advice.

OK - For burning with ifoedit, you need to have your burner as drive M: (this is just the way Derrow make it) I also spoke with Darrow and he says that many are unsucessfull even when it is drive M: I personally have not gotton it to work myself. i burn images using Ulead video studio (you can find it on the web easily with morpheus or something)

#2 - You need to use the turn rip correctly:D . Ripping is ONLY the process of copying and decripting a dvd to your HDD.
DONT worry about the video and ac3. use a ripper to ONLY rip the main movie VOBS and the video ifo and bub for that set of vobs. Then, even if it is under 4.7GB, strip something.(Subtitles anything) and continue with the guide. All you need to rip is the vobs. Don't try to demux audio and video. Again, this guide is for movies over 4.7GB only. If the movie is under 4.7, just use dvddecrypter to rip the main movie and iso/bub as an image and burn from there.

just wanted to say that this guide is the only one that seems to work *easily* if you are after just the main vid....

the only issue I had following it was that the image creation process in ifoedit failed at 98% with a runtime error "unexpected termination"....

doesn't matter, because i just dropped the video_ts folder in primo, sets it up fine...

I will say that I can't get my A03 to work due to errors during testing...

that irritates me!!

viper,
in point 3, when you say "strip something" :
can something be a stream only? or a vob-id only?

my question is : by something do u mean anything ?

does it also mean that i better no to strip anything in smartripper?
but then i might found myself with audio stream starting at 0x81 (for i want to keep french and english is most of the time 0x80) and my standalone player will probably not like it.

Dont strip anything in smartripper!!! Just rip the vobs and the ifo's that you need. Strip a subtitle or something but KEEP all of the vob Id's. These are your chapter pionts.

How do you know what files are subtitles and which files are like other languages? All I want to do is rip like armageddon which is larger than 4.7 to a 4.7 dvdr, I just need the main movie, not all the crap previews before it. Also, if I follow your guide, step by step, when I burn the movie to dvdr, which is the best program to use to burn it with? Thanks!!!!

viper3344

It should say. 99% of the time the first one on top is the plane 2 or 6 channel english. Try keeping the top one only and all of the vob id's. The Unlead dvd authoring program burns ANY disk to work in any player.

You need to make an image under the name (xxxxxxxx.ISO)!!!!!!!! Then use unlead dvd movie maker to burn the image. The engine in this program burns any dvdr to read it in any stand alone player!! I you strip it and it's still over 4.7, make 2 dvd r's. DOOM9 has a guide for this and it's quite simple. Ask me if you have any questions because I did it with Private Ryan and Gladiator and those were over 6 gigs after the strip.
