View Full Version : Force Nvidia custom resolution to 16-235?

It seems everyone uses various hacks to force Nvidia's regular modes to output 0-255.

My problem is the opposite; I need to force the custom resolutions, which default to 0-255, to use 16-235. The reason being that all my components go through a splitter to my projector. My Comcast cable box outputs 16-235 and has no setting to change this. So I need all the rest of my components to use the same black range.

I've tried the various hacks but none seem to affect the custom resolutions, presumably because these resolutions don't seem to be in the registry in the first place. I have no idea where to look.

Any ideas?

Hacks?

You can try with the Nvidia control panel, I think. See http://i.imgbox.com/adjlJYON.png

The control panel setting is strictly for video. I use -- or want to use -- custom resolutions for gaming, either for downsampling or to get a 2.35 aspect ratio or both, but as it is now, I can't because the image is way too dark with crushed blacks.

The hacks are various registry modifications that change the default black range for the Nvidia modes. Unfortunately these do not apply to the custom resolutions.

You can use Custom Resolution Utility (http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU) (CRU) to add new "standard" resolutions to your displays. Hopefully these would be editable in the registry.

Thanks, I just saw that myself was hoping it would work in that way. I'm concerned about this though: "This program adds monitor resolutions, not scaled resolutions. Lower resolutions will be scaled up if GPU scaling is enabled, but higher resolutions won't be scaled down by the GPU. Higher resolutions will only work if the monitor can handle them."

I'll try it when I get home and find out.

That utility doesn't seem to work for me. I couldn't add my resolutions to "standard resolutions" because I can only choose from the dropdown options. I added them under "detailed resolutions", but they don't show up anywhere after reboot -- not in Nvidia control panel, not in Windows 7's screen resolution, nowhere.

"NVIDIA users may need to uncheck "Include extension block" to get custom resolutions to show up."

With my GTX680 and keeping up to date with drivers I do need to uncheck that option.

Edit: By add to "standard" resolutions I just meant they end up looking like standard resolutions in Windows but you do add them in the top right box that only allows a total of four entries. I hope four is enough for you.

I did try unchecking that box, but I was trying so many different things I may have missed a reboot or save somewhere, will try again, thanks for reminding me.
