Capture audio separately

Theatre Pro 550 with mpeg2 hardware capture using GBPVR

When I capture from VCR via coaxial cable the audio isn't very good - Theatre Pro max bitrate 384 kbps mp2 audio

While I am capturing with GBPVR, I can use line out from my VCR to line in on my computer and capture audio with audiograbber

How can I sync up the audio?
Do I need to convert the mp2 to wav then load both waves into something like audacity - and see if I can line them up?

I would suggest using something else to capture, capturing with different devices can cause very slight changes in timing that will make syncing very hard if not impossible. You can get it synced at the start but it will be off at the end. :(

GBPVR looks quite old, are there no other options available to you? I believe VirtualDub (1.6.6+) supports your card and has options to sync external audio to video during capture though I don't know if they work with hardware mpeg2 devices.

The problem with my TheatrePro is that I don't have the "dongle" that allows rca video and audio input or S-Video capture . . .

If a video tape is not in good shape then capturing audio and video through coaxial cable with TheatrePro can really mangle the audio. When I capture the same source with VirtualDub using Mjpeg or Huffyuv, using coaxial input video and rca audio inputs - the audio is way better, even with tapes in poor shape. TheatrePro works quite well with good tapes and I like the hardware mpeg2 capture. GBPVR works quite well with the TheatrePro on XP, Vista, and Windows7. ChrisTV can capture video via coaxial and line-in for audio - but it isn't freeware. VirtualDub and VirtualVCR can't utilize the hardware mpeg2 encoder

As you suggest, it would probably be a nightmare to capture the Video with TheatrePro and the audio with audiograbber and try to sync

So I guess my solution is to use VirtualDub or VirtualVCR when the tape quality is poor.

Why on earth waste time capturing by coax? Just get the dongle.

Yes, I would prefer to use the dongle - but I can't find one anywhere - it appears to be a proprietary ATI item

If anyone knows where I can get one . . .
