The RRENCODE plugin allows you to convert your HD or 4K media to 4K .RED files for use with the REDRAY 4K CINEMA PLAYER. Its drag-and-drop interface along with data rates below 2.5MB/s make this plugin encoder both simple to use and incredibly efficient.

REDCINE-X PRO software is required to use this encoder.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the Redcine-X Pro software is free (https://www.red.com/downloads/4fad7fd417ef027cd8000eb1), but is of course, not as useful without a RED camera.

The RRENCODE (http://www.red.com/store/products/rrencode-plugin) plugin is still on its way, and for some reason costs money. That, while not unreasonable, seems a bit petty for everybody involved: consumers buying a $1.5k media player and a company selling high end video equipment.

Well- if someone would have such a technology now than would not keep it for some fancy player only, but made it as WORLDWIDE standard :)

RED format used in their cameras was also called "unique" and it's actually nothing more than JPEG2000.

It is certainly possible to design a codec that could outperform HEVC. RED, of course, haven't done that, but there isn't any reason it couldn't be done. HEVC is a very competently designed codec, and avoids much of the idiocy that defined many previous attempts to significantly improve on mpeg2. However, every decision that HEVC makes correctly should probably have happened almost ten years ago with AVC. If a company such as RED were to stop listening to the mewling of hardware designers who want to be able to produce decode hardware for $3 a chip after they ramp up production, one could probably get an easy ten or twenty percent efficiency gain over HEVC without any real need for innovation.

At 4K, one could probably top HEVC by an even larger margin. Beyond that, outperforming Mpeg2 or AVC is a gimme at such huge resolutions because their transforms become completely useless.

All of that said, the odds of RED having anything that's even comparable to AVC in terms of efficiency are really very low. If what they have is actually in the same league as HEVC, it will be because they copied it. Just like every other company that has made similar claims, they have already shown that they have no reservations about passing off shameless rip-offs as highly innovative technical achievements.
