vhs-capture: video jumps back and forth

hi folks,

i tried to capture & encode my old vhs-c tapes but when i did so, i found a disturbing error in the captures. sometimes, the video jumps back and takes a frame from a second ago and then goes on normally.

this happens totally randomly.. it could be a few times per second or once in 30 seconds.

when i capture normal vhs i have no problems with this but with all my vhs-c tapes.

some specs:
- vdub version: 1.9.11
- capture card: hauppauge wintv go (bt8X8 chip)
- codec: huffyuv 2.1.1 + patch 0.25
- i put the vhs-c in an adaptor so i can play them in my vcr
- everything is in PAL

it would be totally great if someone has an idea of how to fix this :)

I have no experience with vhs-c but i think you can try manual tracking or a better vcr.

Does it also happen when you play it with your camcorder directly?

i don't have the corresponding camcorder anymore and at the moment, i have no other vcr as well..

i'm not even sure if the distortion is on the tapes. i tried to watch them without capturing but i didn't see the error there.

i was kind of hoping that there was an incorrect setting in vdub ;) i unchecked the options to add frames in some situations and after the capture, the number of added and dropped frames were 0 but still the problem occurs.

thanks for the hint - dscaler seems to be a great tool :)

and yeah, in full screen, there is NO distortion whatsoever. it has to be a problem of the driver > vdub > huffyuv...

any ideas? :)

i reinstalled all capture drivers but without success...

i made a sample (~6 sec) and encoded it quick and dirty :) perhaps that'll make my problem easier to understand.

does it also happen when you don't record (preview only) because i see you record in xvid, not ideal imo

i can also see it when i'm not recording in vdub. but in dscaler i don't see any distortion.

there was a misunderstanding - i capture in huffyuv (and also tried UT codec) but i encoded it for a smaller size for this forum :)

I get errors like that also, but only the beginning of the video.

In my case I think it is from the AVT-8710 TBC, but you didn't mention if you are using that TBC.

i had to google first, what a TBC is ;) and no, i don't use one... it's just the vcr, connected via scart-to-cinch-adapter directly to my wintv capture card and sound card.

meanwhile, i tried some things:
- i tried a second wintv card (older revision) but same problems --> no hardware error at the capture card
- i tried another software (virtual vcr) - same problems
- i tried other codecs - same problems
- i tried uninstalling / reinstalling the driver and different versions

still, i think, the only explanation is a driver problem if there are no errors when watching it via dscaler.

perhaps i'll try setting up the capture card in a completely different computer.

i think i've seen that the video stuttert slightly. if that's in the original as well, perhaps the drivers would normally fill the gaps with that awful frame from a sec ago...

since dscalers recording function is not as powerful as vdub's, i hope that the sound will be in sync and there are no dropped frames in between....

but i'll try my tapes with dscaler... again, thank you very much :)
