Can't solve jerky Titanic bluray!

I am such a newbie, and I apologize if my problem is addressed in another thread. If it is, please point me in the right direction. I've been searching diligently for answers for a few weeks. I've been successfully ripping and burning blurays for a couple of years using MakeMKV and MultiAVCHD...fantastic results! However there is one disc that is driving me crazy- Titanic. I've ripped it on a windows 7 based machine with i5 processor. I've ripped it on Macbook Pro running Windows 7 with Parallels (i7 processor). I've processed with MultiAVCHD on both machines, and burned with Imgburn on both machines, and Toast 11.1 on the Mac side. All other discs I've processed this way play fine on 3 different Samsung standalones (BD-P1500) which are updated with the latest firmware. I have a standalone Pioneer BDR-205 flashed to the latest firmware. I have a slotloading UJ267 installed in the Macbook Pro (works great with Bluray Player for Mac). I have the Big 3 successfully installed: Avisynth, ffddshow, and Haali media splitter. I tweaked the settings with Win7 Filter Tweaker, and confirmed everything is working correctly with Dean's Directshow Decoder Test. Using these configurations, I have successfully backed up dozens of blurays. But not Titanic, despite ripping, and re-ripping the disc. The MKV file plays fine with WMP, VLC and Bluray for Mac. The stream in the BMDV folder plays fine as well. But when burned with either of the aforementioned programs in either of the burners, the disc is jerky, laggy, or whatever would be the appropriate term. I thought there might be a problem with the audio file, so I used MKV Cleaver to rip out just the video file, and put it in a new container with MKVMerge. Same results. I tried unticking the "Insert Sequence Parameter Sets", and then "Insert Enhancement Information", and then unticking both. I abandoned MultiAVCHD, and tried TsMuxerR 1.10.6 on both machines, including the Mac side. Exact same results. I could just go ahead and Transcode it, but I'm trying to learn, and I'd rather not change the compression if someone call tell me what I'm doing wrong. It's maddening to me, because I have not had significant problems with any other disc. When I examine the logs in MultiAVCHD, the only difference between Titanic and other discs that have burned successfully are a line in TsMuxer: h264 bitstream changed: insert picture timing and buffering SEI Units". And in the Meta, it says "Timeshift 2ms"
instead of 0.

Since you now seem to have exhausted the most likely possible causes, I'd suggest you return the original, commercial disc to the place of purchase, in exchange for a new replacement (Stranger things have been known to happen)...

Perhaps try BDRebuilder. It is, in my opinion, the best way to back up a Blu-ray disc. Requires very little intervention and has excellent support here at Doom9 Forums. :)

Well, now that you mention it, I have just started to explore bd rebuilder. Here's my question since I haven't found it answered anyplace else- Can BDRB make an AVCHD disc without transcoding the same way Multiavchd does?

In fact, as long as I'm asking, what about some of the other tools that are out there? I hear conflicting things about making discs with DVDFab and Pavtube. I want to make copies of my discs without transcoding. (Am I using the right terminology here?) Everything I've read says Multiavchd encodes, but does not transcode (unless you want it to). BDRB has different encoder settings you can check off, and takes much longer to process than Multiavchd. Does this mean the file is being transcoded? What's the difference in the way these programs process things?

BTW, I exchanged the Titanic bluray for a new one, and problem persists on Multiavchd....this is the 2D version not the 3D.

Both multiAVCHD and BD-RB use x264 to reencode the file, if you tell them to. You can set an above target size to not reencode but to only demux/remux, keeping only the original audio and subtitle files you select. Also, both can remove warnings and other unwanted titles as well. This will be much faster than if you are going from BD-50 to BD-25.
By spec, to be AVCHD compliant, a Blu-ray will need to be reencoded since bit rate and audio need to meet that spec.
I beleive multiAVCHD uses the word "transcoding" while it s actually reencoding with x264.

Unfortunately, BDRB produces the exact same results as Multiavchd, and TsMuxeR 1.10.6 by itself. The video kind of chugs along...it's jerky for a second or two, then kind of speeds up like it's trying to catch up, but immediately slows down. The frames themselves are very clear- no pixelation.

Do you think it could be a ripping problem with MakeMKV?
The only log difference between this disc and others I have ripped successfully is the line in TsMuxeR:

H264 bitstream changed: insert pict timing and buffering period SEI units

I have never used MakeMKV, only AnyDVD HD. It could be a bad rip. Try AnyDVD or DVDFab on this disc, it is one way to rule out the rip.

You might want to use a cleaning disc on your burner/reader. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US.

Then again, you may still want to exchange the disc.

Hey- Thank you- I have two different burners that produce the same results, but I have one of those "vortex" cleaners. I'll try it on the burners.

I tried DVDFab, and used the Clone function to create an ISO. I then converted the ISO to MKV using DVDFab, and then Multiavchd.

Same results.

I did exchange the disc.

I ripped out the h264 video stream by itself using MKVcleaver. I thought I would try to convert to another container format if I could find one that does it losslessly. I found a program called Yamb that promises to put the h264 stream into and MP4 container without reencoding. When I run the resulting file through Multiavchd....viola! Smooth video! Not so fast. There are lots of artifacts in the video, especially during the dark scenes. Big blotches of green and pink appear most noticiably in the underwater scenes. When I play the MP4 container with VLC, the file is corrupted with these blotches. I have re-ripped with Yamb several times with the same results.

So my question, what exactly did I do with Yamb? Am I on the right track, and what other program does anyone recommend to convert without loss? (I notice MKVcleaver has a tic to convert h264 to AVI file. I'm off to try that next) Thanks if anyone is still looking at this thread!

So, basically, you ripped a BD into an MKV? As opposed to a regular BD image (.ISO) or folder (BDMV)?
I don't use MKV, but I remember there have been some issues with MKV and tsmuxer (internally used by multiAVCHD).

I would either demux the MKV using MKV-related tools, then remux the needed parts with tsmuxer or similar. Or, rerip the BD again, but not in MKV.

Since the MKV plays ok, it means that the original BD is ok, so no need to change it, unless you want to incur some losses to the distributors.

Problem solved. MakeMKV doesn't appear to work with this disk. I tried demuxing the mkv into separate streams, and no love. Then I used Anydvd to rip the disc to the hard drive. (decrypting on-the-fly didn't work, producing tsmuxer failure). After the hard drive rip, I used MultiAVCHD , and have a perfect disc. I tried BD Rebuilder, and got the same positive result.
