A good editing software!

What are the known serious editing softwares on PC beside Adobe Premiere? Premiere has serious flaws when you want to work in a different frame rate than the project time base. Thanks

If you are working with avi; the recommendation is to use Virtual Dub and/or Nandub.

Nandub -- a specialized version of Virtual Dub -- knows only the DivX3 video codec, but it can handle variable bit rate mp3, which Virtual Dub cannot. Since most work with audio and video separately, this isn't an issue.

I use Virtual Dub for video encoding (primarly DivX4) and Nandub for audio interleaving, and avi splitting.

Gordian Knot is a terrific calculator that uses both Virtual Dub and Nandub as needed.

Doom9 has a bunch of guides on using these tools.

he wants editing software, not compression stuff. Nandub and VDub are horrible as editors because they are not built to do that. There is Avid Express, which is okay but not great. Honestly, for low-end video editing, a Mac and Final Cut Pro are the way to go. Final Cut 3 is an absolute beauty in terms of speed and functionality. Avid v3 DV(I think this is what it is called, not sure. whatever the new Avid about to come out is) is supposed to blow FCP out of the water on Mac (course, this is just Avid publicity). If it comes to PC, then that would be the way to go.

THE editor should be Ulead Media Studio,
as many functions as premiere claims,but working! and more user friendly.
never wondered why you can find premiere eveywhere,warez too,and Ulead is rare??
premiere needs publicity, and ulead doesnt need...

however, as project based editor,also ulead gives some problem in changing framerate, albeit less than premiere.
a small,nice editor that can change any framerate without any problem, is videomach
but also our dear avisynth is good to just change the framerate.

Another good editor at an intermediate point between virtual dub and big programs like Ulead, is MGI videowave.

intermediate means that it has not a timeline ,just like virtual dub, but can make non linear editing using and storing "thumbnail clips".
and this could be an easy way to put non linear editing into virtualdub too.

MGI videowave got another good and very noticeable point:
IT IS THE BEST MPG TO AVI CONVERTER! (decompressor)
no corruption or desync or incompleteness can stop it doing this job
(and i would like very much that vdub could imitate its convertion engine)

Hi,

agree with you all BUT (always a but !) when it comes to output formats Premiere clearly leads the pack. Why:
- export RealAudio
- export QuicktimeMovie
- export all kinds of AVI using the Win registered compressing engines (codecs)
- export different kind of MPEG-1 (incl. high quality Panasonic)

and now it comes:

- export high quality MPEG-2 using CCESP, TMPEG via the AviWrapper frameserver

That is the killer argument this beats all others ! On the others you always have to save first in a VFW AVI to get CCESP or TMPEG accept your input. This degrades quality. Even when it comes to resizing you don't need the crap Premiere resizer, just loop it thru an AviSynth Script, 'bit slow, but works like charm.

yeah, premiere got many plugins
but intermediate avi doesnt degrade quality if u have space for non lossy avi

Hmmmm...... Have you ever heard of HuffYuv ?

It is lossles and you get compression ratios of about 2:1 !

30m/s at 720x576(RGB in full screen is 30m/s,not20), are ~22mb at 640x480, and 15m at 640x320

22m/s in rgb are 10m/s using the losseles pic video codec
and 7.5m/s using the still losseless indeo "raw" yuv9

6m/s using the "almost losseless" picv mjpg at 100%
same codec at 97%,still good, brings you at 4.5m/s

and......if u work at 12.5fps, like I do, it is 2.3m/s

Vegas Video, like DDogg said. IMO the best video editing program short of Avid's lineup. It can interpolate frames for clips that don't match your project's framerate.

And it offers a slew of other features you won't find in any other PC video editing program, such as real-time previewing. How people can get ANYthing done without real-time previewing is beyond me.

sonic foundry sw is more for audio than video
sure if it edit the audio of a video, let you to see the video part too .

im an ulead user, installed vegas time ago,to test, and never i will install it again.
and sure, ulead ms has realt pw too!

about "interpolate", what do you mean?
editors just remove frames,or duplicate them,to match output settings.
no interpolation is involved.

editors "project based" got some problem to change frame rate thought, u have to be careful.

Well, VV doesn't just duplicate frames; it can produce additional frames with a sort of blending technique. The end result looks like really good motion blur, and is terrific for interlaced PAL-to-NTSC conversion.

Actually, even VV 2.0 has it. Check the "Resample" box either in the clip's Properties dialog, or your custom render template if you want it applied to the whole project.
