What kind of a machine would you recommend to someone if they are planning to rip, make divx movies, use photoshop, and premeire?

This is more of a general recommendation, buy what you can afford:
As fast as possible, P4/2000 or better, Preferably 2 or 3 HDs as large as possible, especially if he intends to capture video. (1 to record, 1 for editing, 1 for WinXp and progz), DVD-R, and probably most important a very good graphics card, not necessarily fast, but emphasis on quality. Also a good screen, Trinitron probably a must. Do not use a flat screen, they are not up to par for video yet. A good sound card is also of use.

Why is that pls ? And, erm...isn't a Trinitron a flat screen ? :)

He's talking about different types of monitors. A Sony Trinitron may have a flat screen, but it is a regular CRT computer monitor.

A "flatscreen" monitor is usually an LCD monitor which right now is the sharpest image monitor you can buy. This is because each pixel corresponds to a physical display component, images appear much crisper than when viewed on a traditional CRT monitor.

@hakko - Don't be so sure. This month's PC Magazine showed a prototype monitor from IBM called the "Big Bertha". This monster has a high end resolution of 3840x2400. Or 9.2 million pixels.

Of course, it costs 19000 dollars....

Funny, i always thought you called an LCD an ... "LCD" not a "flatscreen" ( curved LCD ? hmmm )...

The term "flatscreen" applies to CRT's to differentiate them from the "fishbowl" style of CRT.

My bad. But you know what I meant :)

Still, he said that "Flatscreens are not up to par on video yet" which is false, since according to the latest :) flatscreens are same as regular monitors with curved screens (same method of displaying picture).

When I think of "flatscreen" I'm thinking of the new generation of monitors that are 1" thick and weigh 4 ounces....

Sorry to cause confusion ;)
