vStrip not ripping DVD

Hi,

I recieve the following error message from vStrip ver. 0.8d2 :

vStrip lost synch (not authenticated?) [@LBA 2118532]

as i am trying to rip Pirate: Hells Belles ( restricted title,btw ), single layer, all region codes.

The DVD has obviously been authenticated for vStrip to start in the first place ( using PowerDVD ver. 3.0 if it makes any diff ).

Everything proceeds as normal until it reaches about 98% progress and then vStrip seems to pause ( the ETA numbers dont change ) and my DVD-rom light starts flashing instead of being constantly lit. Its waits maybe 20 seconds and then i get the above error message. I assume it is starting to process the last .vob as it is sized 126k, and i have the first 4 preceding .vobs - i can open these in DVD2AVI and they seem fine, i can view them etc.

The same thing happened after i ran the default vStrip settings, and after i changed "Search" to "each VOB-&CELL-ID" and "Mult./Treshold/%" to 1 and 1.

I own a number of these DVDs and they all seem to be pretty cheaply produced - we arent talking mega-budgets for DVD production here i would say ;). Anyhow, Smartripper has had problems with the other DVD's - basically it doesnt throw an error message in the ripping process but nandub crashes right at the end of the second pass when i encode them ( this has happened numerous times, i am sure it was smartripper that caused the "problem" ) but i use vStrip to avoid stuff like that..... which is what makes this annoying! grrr...

So,..... I'm ripping with Smartripper now but i have little confidence with this DVD atm, unless it too chucks an error message i will not be able to find out until the very end of my encoding process if it has worked correctly :(.

Can anybody suggest something ? This is the first time vStrip has failed on me - ever :( .
Is DVD-Decryptor suitable for ripping for GKnot encoding ? Are there any other methods i could use to rip this DVD - are there other settings for vStrip i could use ? It'd be nice to get vStrip to do it! :)

EDIT: Ok, smartripper just crashed at 97% ( same point i guess ). I'm really at a loss now. btw, this film has no ending credits so im
missing out on actual movies scenes at the end of the film.

well.. you should give dvd decrypter a shot.. you can still use vstrip for the files on your hd to strip out what you really need.. but in terms of ripping problematic discs I guess dvd decrypter is the champ (that's something I can't quite test in my comparisons as I tend to go after anyone who makes a single scratch in my DVD with a basebal bat.

Well, I have bad news - DVD Decrypter chucked an error on 98% ( same place afaik )..... this really is a problem DVD! :( I've only run DVD Decrypter once so far ( i had to sleeep ). Can anyone tell me anything about what i might do next - anything ? Any other options for any apps i could turn on and try ?

As an aside - Lightning UK!... i have to admit i hadn't used DVD Decryptor until last night - that's a great little app man ( fast!! ), thanks for ur hard work and generosity to provide it for us to use! :)

(... but it didn't work on this DVD - like everything else so far tho )

If it means anything the DVD is brand new, i have only viewed it once after removing the plastic cover - no baseball bats have been swung :D ( yet )...

That last error line is making me think it may be a DVD-rom issue ( no idea really tho ) so i am trying a different ( newer ) drive. I've ripped a lot of DVDs on the current drive tho. Please post any thoughts, comments or anything! Thanks!

Right - i tried again with DVD Decryptor and kept pushing the "ignore" button when it threw an error and eventually it asked me if i wanted to ignore the error so i said yes and it finally ripped all the vobs.

Then i attempted to rip the video and audio from the vobs that are now on my HDD using vStrip, but it gave the same error message as the first time at 98% again ( see 1st post ) - i thought i could back up *any* dvd that my player can play..... am i right ?

Another thing - i changed dvd drives and now the last line of DVD-Decryptor reads "Unrecovered read error".....

Okey dokes, i have solved the problem :D

...I ended up trying vStrip again on a new samsung i have hanging around and it worked without a hitch this time ..... it ripped at about 8-12x as well :) - i might start using this thing more often!

I wonder: has anyone else experienced this problem of not being able to rip from old dvd-drives before as well ? I ripped the dvd again on my old drive using vStrip and the same error happened ..... its certainly something related to the drive. Had no probs with my old drive before - ive backed up a large number! :(

actually.. I had an old toshiba drive that I ruined listening to too many MP3 CDs directly from the drive.. it had the same problems.. the smalles scratch would have it choke.. so remember: only use the DVD drive whenever necessary, copy all the data you need to your HD, and make sure you handle your DVDs with the utmost care.

I am attempting to rip a specific episode from "The Best Of Friends Vol.2" DVD.

I am getting the exact same error message that diji1 gets when ripping that episode using vstrip (i'm using ver. 0.8d). I even followed the suggestions listed on the faq regarding this problem (changing the vstrip settings like "search" and "Mult/Threshold/%").
Mine stops around 59% progress.

And just like diji1, I also tried using smartripper to rip that episode. Only this time, the process freezes around 91%.

I've successfully managed to rip all the other episodes on the DVD, except for this one.

Now, I was reading through all the posts, and apparently diji1's solution to the problem was to use a different DVD drive for the ripping process. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare DVD drive lying around, and I'm not about to go out and buy a new one because I think my present DVD player works fine (Lite-On DVD16). My question is if someone out there has found a solution other than this.

I did read somewhere on similar postings that the problem could be that the DVD itself is scratched, which understandly would cause errors in the ripping process. I am going to buy a DVD cleaning kit to see if cleaning the DVD provides a solution. But in the meantime, if anyone out there has any suggestions/advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

in most (recent) cases, problems with DVDs were not due to the ripper used but to the disc / drive being old / scratched / crap.
if you want to be sure, use dvddecrypter3 and actually _read_ the error statement as it has excellent error messages...
tracking servo failure i.e. tells you that the laser couldn't be aligned correctly to read a particular block etc...
