View Full Version : multiAVCHD: compilation hangs at renaming to 8.3 format

I have been using multiAVCHD for 2 years without problem. I'm not sure why this has started now, I'm wondering if it's because I upgraded to Windows 7 but haven't heard of anyone else with a similar problem.
I'm trying to put a compilation of 74 blu-ray titles on a 2TB external HD to play through PS3. I successfully made 2 compilations of 46 titles and 28 titles each on the HD but when I combine them it hangs at "setting FAT compatible 8.3 file names".
I've made compilations previously with many more than 74 titles in it so I'm sure its not just the number of titles. Every time it hangs I can only recover the PC by resetting the whole machine from the button on the tower unit and the compilation is ruined. I have to make another backup copy before I start again and that takes nearly 3 days.
Does anyone have any idea where I should start with this? Maybe there is something in the settings I don't understand? Perhaps using 2 TB HD is the problem? I'm using build 771 and Windows 7. Any thoughts and ideas welcome, this is driving me insane!

but when I combine them it hangs at "setting FAT compatible 8.3 file names"Rather than combining the two groups of files, have you tried DIRECTLY creating ONE set of the 74 files?

I build the compilation up by renaming the AVCHD folder to something else and then making a new AVCHD folder containing the new movie only (or sometimes 2 or 3 movies) on the same external drive. This is really to ensure it will do it successfully and that there is space on the drive without ruining the main compilation.
When it is successfully done I will rename that AVCHD folder too and then combine the two of them and I can delete the old AVCHD folders. It may seem a long way to do it but with 70+ titles in a compilation it is worth it.
So I started again with this compilation and added one title at a time (and now I'm using a different HD too, just in case it was that). I had 73 titles in the main compilation and another compilation with just 1 title in on the same HD. It has all been going smoothly until I added this 1 title to the main compilation and it hangs at "setting FAT compatible 8.3 file names" again.
I wondered if it was because there was only 6GB spare on the drive so I deleted a couple of titles (including the last one I added) and did it again.
It is still hanging at that same point!!:(
Surely I can't be the only one with this problem?

Once again:
Rather than combining the two groups of files, have you tried DIRECTLY creating ONE set of the 74 files?

I haven't done that because I can't get 74 BD onto the HD. I'm copying the BD onto my PC (usually 3 at a time), then making mini compilation on the ext HD alongside the main compilation and and then combining them.
Do you think it will make a difference? It was successful until I got to the 74th one.

Something I've noticed happens and appears to be random is a message when I sometimes try to delete, rename etc a file or folder on my PC saying I am not authorised to do so. I am the only user in the list of users for this PC and it has 'administrator' under my name so I'm not sure why that is happening? Perhaps whatever it is is happening to a file it is trying to rename?

@Bomopu
That usually happens when another file or program is open and accessing or being accessed by the file or program that you are trying to delete...

Ok thanks, I usually leave my PC on it's own while it makes the compilations but I'll try closing as much background stuff as I can.

Ok, I'm just adding this in case anyone else has a similar problem. I created a dual boot to Win7 and put XP back on; installed multiAVCHD and all the other stuff that's needed onto XP too and now it's working perfectly. Compilation completed without any problem!
So it's clearly something to do with Windows 7 but I've already done a wipe and reinstall and it didn't solve it so I don't know...
Anyway, I can live with finishing off my compilations using xp but it's not ideal. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
