I'm using a very recent nightly build of Avidemux 2.6 to hardcode subtitles from a .ass file using SSA filter (only available in the nightly builds), Mpeg4 AVC encoder, Mkv muxer, and copy audio. After experimenting, I've decided to accept Avidemux's defaults with the Constant Bitrate encoding mode, bitrate set to 12000 kbit/s. The original mkv file is 11gb, so these settings are a quick way to give me results that are good enough.
Full encoding takes about 18 hours and everything completes without error. After the first 2gb, I can see that the created Windows file doesn't grow as fast as it should, and the final result is only 3.5gb. VLC playback shows the correct time (about 2 1/2 hours), but playback quits after about 30 minutes. The first 30 minutes plays plays fine, subtitles encoded, but it still finishes early. I tried encoding a different movie this way and got similarly bad results.
I thought maybe Avidemux was buffering data somewhere and would write it all to the file eventually, but apparently not. Somehow, after encoding the first 30 minutes, Avidemux continues to work, and its status information and statistics indicates it's properly creating a much bigger file, but the actual file it leaves me with is somehow not the whole project. Any suggestions? Avidemux's forums are closed for registration (wtf?). And seeing as how everything about my encoding runs correctly, except for the final result, I have no clue what to troubleshoot.
