@PB, Thanks very much for your in-depth answer, very informative.

Not sure, but I think that both mpeg1 and mpeg2 pad to reach a fixed bitrate (TmpGenc I think used to do that),
dont know anything about Divx/XVid/AVC.

The built-in Avisynth Compare() function seems to be rarely used/discussed, it is a filter that I repeatedly re-discover
every now and then, but dont use too often, it should have more exposure really, seems to be hidden away in the docs.

I've never actually tried an x264 lossless encode, think I'll give it a bash after what you said.

Compared to the source, looking at my screenshots, I'm trying to make the encode to be as heavy as the original source :P

I'm sorry, but I still haven't found any screenshots that compare the same frame "before" and "after". Am I missing something? Which post are they in?

It might be worth looking for an easier-to-access host for you screenshots, testclips, etc.
