View Full Version : Sudden issues with x264 encoding(unplayable, file size too small)

So, basically I've been encoding using Xvid4PSP 6.0 and Staxrip for months without issue until yesterday. I'd just recently finished recording some gameplay with FRAPS. HDD actually maxed out(second drive for video capture/editing) and had 100MB left. So, cleared up some stuff and got to encoding. The problem is that when I tried to encode the estimated time went from 4h to 1h..then 14min. It finished far too quickly. I then ended up with a file ~70MB and no video(or audio IIRC). I didn't get around to testing Staxrip yet.

So, I tried it a second time. Same deal. Opened up Handbrake and same deal. So I switched from CRF to 3-Pass, and had it happen again. Tried that once more and then it worked... Went on to next video hours later, after a few tries got it to render too. Now however, nothing will render. No idea what to do, so tried to re-register x264 through Gspot. Still nothing. So uninstalled K-lite Mega 32&64. Rebooted, same issue.

I'm unfamiliar with how codecs work, how to fully uninstall them. No doubt there's still some x264 version around that Xvid is trying to use. Perhaps from Sony Vegas Pro? I'm at a loss here and it's really frustrating how little info I've been able to find on google. I found one mention of this, maybe I'm searching wrong, but it was in Russian and even through Gtranslate it seemed like there was no solution found in the thread. Close to reinstalling and starting from scratch. I really don't want to but I'm losing time trying to figure this out.

I'm running W7 64. I had k-lite Mega installed(installed mirco first as instructed) both 32 and 64 bit. Sony Vegas Platinum 12 and Pro. Installed GoPro for cineform. Lagarith Lossless via the installer on official site. Installed some Matrox codecs as well awhile back. The only recent change I can recall related to codecs was uninstalling and reinstalling Lagarith manually. How that could affect x264...this is just so frustrating. Any help here would be awesome

xvid4psp uses x264 library inside its executable, so system codecs do not affect it's encoding. Also Sony Vegas does not install codecs you can use for h264 outside of Vegas.

How do you come to conclusion of "no video"? If files do not open in Vegas, it might be the result of settings in encoding, not the actual absence of video/audio. What settings do you use in handbrake?

I've got some weird fraps->x264 encodings in xvid4psp 6. It sped up some parts of clip and then produced freeze screen in the end. Even though this encoding was fully playable. Even though handbrake encodes were ok.

Ah, sorry. I forgot to mention how I was determining no video. I view files through MPC, the one bundled with K-lite. Also, I tried out other avi's as well and they too have this issues. I've been encoding Mjpeg captured from my xbox 360 via a Black Magic Intensity Pro for months now and rendered that out of Vegas via Lagarith and have never had this issue before. Naturally I tried such a file, I even rendered one of the fraps avis into lagarith via Vdub. Also tried to render the mjpegs themselves. Still the issue persists.

I was remembering Xvid4PSP 6.0 uses system codecs. It seems odd that Handbrake and Xvid would have the same x264 issue if they're not using the same system codec. In handbrake I tried to do a CRF 18 encode with AAC stereo. I suppose I need to try Staxrip now, that definitely use's it's own version of x264 in it's applications folder.

The GoPro cineform codec couldn't be interfering somehow with decoding the avi could it? I noticed in the Mp4s that did render with Xvid that they seemed to have undergone the colorspace conversion Cineform does. They were much darker than the source video and definitely not the results I've obtained in the past.

I apologize for not including all of this information initially. I haven't been getting very much sleep lately.

I've been able to use Staxrip without any issues. With Xvid4PSP 6.0 and Handbrake it still occurs. Uninstalled Xvid and reinstalled it, and it's still occurring. The results I can get from Xvid have always been better than Stax. I'd really like to get this resolved so any help here is welcome.
