VLC backend server questions

Hi all.

** If this question is in the wrong place, sorry. Please feel free to move it somewhere more appropriate ***

I want to use my PC as a backend server for streaming videos. Is there a plugin for avisynth that might help me ? I have tried using VLC (was hit and miss) and ffmpeg (no luck for me although i think thats closer to what i want)

Then i thought hang on, AVIsynth is a frame server, all I need is a plugin to transcode and Im away. Am I talking nonsense ?

Dont particularly want to stream using UDP or RTSP using SAP announe or anything quite as sophisticated .... I just want to open a video file on a low powered PC that is decoded and transcoded on the high powered back end PC.

Any help greatly appreciated.

which role exactly do you envision avisynth taking on in your scenario

I have tried with VLC v2.0.4 and just cannot get it to work. Can you give me the command promt you use to make VLC serve a video file, that would help.

Like I say in my post, I wonder if AVIsynth can help, I dont envisage it doing anything in particular, I pose this question in order to discuss.

i think with avs2avi that's doable but without sound

There are plenty of examples on this page (http://wiki.videolan.org/Streaming). It sounds like you probably want HTTP streaming.

VLC usage is off topic to this forum section, but Avisynth is definitely the wrong tool for the job and "frame server" probably doesn't mean what you think it means.

I asked about VLC because you said perhaps that's what I should use.

I thought it might be interesting and helpful (to me) to pose the question here, as this is a forum for media enthusiasts and the like.

If AVIsynth is the wrong tool for the job (and I agree it probably is, as I intimated in my original question) do you know what might be the right tool for the job. (other than VLC if that is off topic).

Sure, you can use avisynth. Google TCPServer(). But you'll be bottlenecked by your network. In a 100 Mbps network you'll get just a bit less than SD through.

Use VLC.

No, I meant if you want to ask questions on how to stream with VLC, the "avisynth usage" forum section is not the right place. Try starting a thread in "software players" or something, or ask a moderator to move this thread there.

While it is technically possible to stream with Avisynth, you really don't want to do that. Don't look into avs2avi, just use VLC.

OK I have now used VLC, got it working, thanks for your help :)

Can a moderator move this thread to the software players section please, and maybe title it "VLC backend server questions" as I now have some questions regarding how to use the VLM manager.

VLC has great command line support and can be run with only a telnet interface so I think I can set this up to do exactly what I want :)
