If you want to give Lightworks a shot and are having troubles to import your footage try my EyeFrame Conterter (http://eyeframe.tk) to contert the files to a Lightworks friendly format.

Lightworks is far more powerful, but for simple edits these products (particularly VideoPad) are good and much simpler to learn. So, it depends how serious your editing is going to be and how much time you want to invest into learning a program.
