View Full Version : The Sorry State of Video Encoding Software

I wanted to stream copy audio and video from an MKV container to an MP4 container. But, none of the popular simple software supports stream copy. So, I used YAMB which did stream copy. But, the results were worthless because the video and audio ran at different rates.

Anyway, little of the popular software seems to even support variable bitrate video. And, they don't even tell you that they're using constant bitrate.

There's major software, both free and commerical, which won't even remove black bars from DVD source.

There are numerous software encoders, but only a couple that I think are good (top-quality results), and none that I think are great (highly functional, easy, and polished).

BTW, the home page hasn't been updated since January. I've forgotten what year.

Sorry but your post makes very little sense. It will make perfect sense if in every place where you say "software can't" you will be saying "I have no idea how to"

If you are stream copying both audio in video, then you are simply remuxing...

There is a great software for just that here on the forum but you don't seem to have searched hard enough:

"software can't"
If he did what you suggest his post would be gobbledigook.
That phrase doesn't appear anywhere in his post.

I don't mean it literally. It is not obvious enough?

I didn't say software can't. I said popular software doesn't. And, I do know how, newbie.

That makes my point. MkvToMp4 is at v0.221. It's not mature software. It works, where some similar software doesn't work. But, it's not going to be on anyone's website of generally recommended software.

I think it's a sorry state of affairs that software you buy on the local store or find from a place like Gizmo's Freeware doesn't do something as simple as stream copy video, and probably not even constant quality video when you want to encode.

Then "popular software" is not that popular as you think. Now that you expanded on the topic, its just naive to ask this much from software you find in such places. Also what makes you think some software is not mature even if it does the job? You want to see label "my shitty website certified this software to be good and mature?". Also its no surprise that you don't find some more complicated tools on websites whose main readers are like you.
Does that website have something like megui or avisynth? If not - you won't lose much if you remove it from your bookmarks.

you buy software that meet your needs, not to do things that it cannot do.

It's like asking a bakery cook to make you a Chinese meal, it just doesn't make sense in the first place. And you're now blaming on the cook?

You realize that versions numbers are completely arbitrary, right? Being v0.221 says nothing about whether that piece of software is mature. Putting an arbitrary 1.0 on the release does not magically make a piece of software "mature".

Your reply has nothing to do with my post.

Well your OP is nothing but a rant and you do not really want any responses anyway, do you?

What are you trying to accomplish?

He said he "wanted to stream copy audio and video from an MKV container to an MP4 container".

But you're right that he seems more interested in ranting than getting a solution, because he rejected the good suggestion he was given based on the placement of the decimal point in the version number.

now i see why chrome and firefox use such high version numbering. ;)

oh look chrome is much better than firefox because it has higher number ... lol

I was like.. "stream copy" what the hell does it even mean?? Does he want to capture a live stream or what?

But I understand he wants to just remux.

The problem with MKV to MP4 is that MKV supports a lot more video and audio formats than MP4.
Although any unsupported formats (such as AC3) can be muxed as "private stream", in practice it doesn't really work very well and many players will have a problem playing it or connecting it to proper codec.

By definition you are not performing video encoding. Your post should be titled "The Sorry State of Video Remuxing Software".

I think "popular" and "mature" software is always going to be skewed definitions.

Since there's a lot of open source to work with, there's bound to be plenty of front ends and "all-in-ones" with varying capabilities and limitations.
It just takes a lot of patience and diligence to find which ones work best under certain scenarios.
It's foolish to think there's a perfect, singular program that trumps every other.

Even if the software is closed source or proprietary, there's no real regulations or laws as to how programs can be created and how they work. Except for the licensing. The licensing and distribution is about the only thing you can count on being constant. There are plenty of commercial software that do the same work but in very different ways.

If a program lacks in areas you feel are neglected, you can always join the devs in their dedicated forums and express your concerns.
Whether bugs, suggestions or reports on how they work, they all need this information to make the program better and more improved than its current "sorry state".
