View Full Version : Can Demuxing and Remuxing corrupt video?

I have tried demuxing a movie from an mkv container (that plays flawlessly) to remux it into an MP4 container, I converted the AC3 track to AAC using MEGUI and remuxed using MEGUI's MP4 muxer and this happens once or twice during the movie:

What I find weird is that I remuxed it to an MP4 with the AC3 audio and those corrupted scenes aren't there, but maybe other parts of the movie got corrupted instead, I didn't have time to watch the whole movie to see. Could it be the new AAC audio track (converted using NeroEncoder) that is causing the trouble or remuxing with MP4BOX?

The thing is, I want to use AAC so I can stream it with Flash Player and I have a good few movies I want to convert to MP4, I've since re-encoded a few using handbrake (excluding MEGUI, Yamb, MKVExtract and MKVMerge) and haven't had any trouble so far but I was hoping to avoid re-encoding altogether, also Handbrake is a good piece of software but you can't tweek it as much as MEGUI which always has been my tool of preference when it comes to encoding HD content into MKV. I've never had any trouble encoding movies and muxing them into an MKV using either MEGUI or MKVMerge. It seems this only started happening when I began demuxing and remuxing to MP4. I don't know much about MP4 containers, could this be a known issue with the container itself? I would appreciate any knowledge anyone here could give me on this subject.

I'd hazard a guess... this looks like a problem with the muxer or demuxer.

Also, moved to the containers forum, as this is not really about H.264 encoding.

Thanks for the input Blue_MiSfit, that was my guess too.

Here's the thing, It happened again since I first posted with a movie I downloaded. It had two audio tracks (English and Russian) so I put it through MKVMerge and unchecked the Russian language track, then I transfered the movie to another computer and put it through handbrake (the bitrate was too high for streaming) and just for kicks I used my original computer to re-encode with MEGui. I watched the one made with Handbrake and it happened again two thirds through the movie and near the end of the movie. I checked out the one made with MEGui and it was also corrupted in the same places. So I checked out the original to make sure it wasn't corrupted to begin with and there was no problems with it.

So all this leads me to believe it happens when using MKVMerge or MKVExtract.

Anyone know if there's a problem with the latest build of MKVToolnix?
