I sincerely appreciate any input you guys can give here, and I apologize if the answers are already available... I'll search more later but I'm about to head out the door. However, I'm willing to pay for this information, so please read on:
My question is: What programs do groups like CtrlHD use when they rip and release tv episodes/movies from BlurRay? I've run across this question recently due to the following:
Lost S03 is the only season I cannot find in 1080p, so I took it upon myself to rip it. However, using MediaInfo, I've found key differences in their rips vs mine (they have other seasons ripped). I've been sticking to the rules as best as I can: http://scenerules.irc.gs/t.html?id=2012_1080pTV.nfo, but here are the differences:
1) I've been using MakeMKV to rip the BluRay Tracks, and RipBot to code. My video seems fine... I think? (mine: 9652Kbps vs their: 9400 Kbps) Both AVC @L4.1
2) Audio is the main issue. Ripping from the BluRay, I can grab the Dolby Digital audio track. There is no DTS audio track (there is the option for LPCM, lossless, etc, but not DTS), yet their releases are ALL in DTS?
My Rip is Dolby Digital @640 Kbps (max for AC-3...Dolby Digital)... theirs is 1510Kbps DTS (Max for DTS). To me, at least, DTS sounds better. I know that's an entirely other argument, but lets forget that for now. There is no DTS on the BluRay, so they are obviously converting the rip somehow. My question is with what and how?
So where am I going wrong? Please coach me here, I'll literaly pay anyone who can get me up to par with a professional release (just PM me). Am I using the wrong programs? If so, what should I be using? Also, how would I go about converting the audio to DTS (again, I know there are arguments over DD vs DTS, but lets just assume I want DTS)? What program do they use for that? Where can I get it?
Any info would be MASSIVELY valuable... down to the command line arguments I should be using for x264.exe if need be (even though I've been using MakeMKV / RipBot, and RipBot allows me to specify --ref 4 etc).
To reiterate, this is all for 1080p. Please let me know if I should be doing something different... higher quality video perhaps (more than 10,000 Kbps?). Someone that can COACH me that has scene experience and knowledge is what I'm looking for, and who I'm willing to pay for. Thank you so much!
Why am I willing to pay you ask? I have a TON of BluRays I own that I want to rip to 1080p in PERFECT condition with the smallest size possible (although size is a relative term... I have 32 TB to play with, so if a single episode can be 4G with perfect quality - GREAT! if it needs to be 5 or 6, that's okay, too). Battlestar Galactica, for instance... I want to personally rip to 1080p. So learning from the pro's, even at a cost, would benefit me in the long run. That being said, I hope the scene shows its true colors and doesn't take advantage of my $$ offer!
