Create "Flip Disc" chapter for double-sided DVD-R's

i have some movies that need to be split to 2 dvd-r's. i have some double-sided dvd-r's from cd-recordable.com that i'd like to burn them on.
i have the sony 300+1 settop changer and would like to create an extra chapter (30 seconds in length) at the end of the first disc that says "Flip Disc". i'll then press the flip disc button on my remote and have the sony flip it. if the movie ends suddenly (without this extra chapter) the sony ejects the disc and goes to the next disc in the carossel.

can anyone tell me how to do this.
i was thinking of creating in photoshop, bringing into premiere and saving out a 30 second clip of the "Flip Disc" banner. how can i get this back into vob form (remux with a seperate existing 30 second warning message, then add this as a final chapter to the first disc)?

I've got the exact same setup (Sony 860) and also have the dual sided recordables from cd-recordable.com. This sounds like an excellent idea especially for the 'less technical' members of my family that think I just waste all of my time doing this hobby. I hope we can find a workable solution for this. As soon as I finish my other project 'moving a vob from disk 1 to disk 2 preserving chapters. I would be very happy to contribute. The movie I'm working on right now would benefit from this solution (pearl harbor).

if you have to put "0" size vob's on the second disk to "fool" IfoEdit, don't know why you couldn't create a 30 second vob file to place at the end of the first disk. the original ifo file thinks you have, say, 20 chapters...but you only have 10....plus the extra new "flip-chapter" vob. then run ifoedit and have it rebuild the vob's and ifo's.

that's what i'll try and report back.

now i need to research on how to convert an avi/mpeg to a vob.

I worked on this a bit last night. On movies that you are using DVDMaestro to pull in a re-encoded mpg file, it's easy as pie.

I created a picture of the Sony remote with a red circle around the flip button and a caption saying to continue to movie press the 'flip' button. I saved this as a bmp. I pulled it into Adobe Premiere and stretched it out to 1 minute. Exported the timeline into a mpg file. I was able to pull that into DVDMaestro and add it to the end of the movie. That worked just fine. The only problem I had was that the movie was in 16:9 format so it squashed the picture a little. I'm sure that can be fixed by futzing around with the image, or by having DVDMaestro create a new VOB out of it and setting it to 4:3. Want to really get fancy, make the image in Premeire animated, colorful, with music, flipping DVD disk etc.

To get a VOB for use in adding it to the end of a movie wasn't hard either (if you have DVDMaestro). Just put the mpg on the timeline and compile and you'll get a vob. Now, getting the movie you are working to to accept the vob might be another story. I'm sure IfoEdit 'create ifo's' or 'vob extras' will be needed here, and since there's no chapter issues (I don't think), It might work just fine by adding it as the next vob in the set.

I'd put my samples on the net but I don't have any webspace (the vob was 20 megs), and my stupid cable modem is only high speed one way. The upload is at modem speed.

Wish there was a command we could send to the Sony to tell it to flip the disk. A command we could embed in the movie itself. That would be trick!!!

i have dvdmaestro, but haven't had a chance to play with it.
i have other authoring software that i can bring in a premiere mpeg and author a vob.

since this vob won't be a chapter, maybe ifoedit will just include it WITHIN the final chapter on disc 1.

i have to test tonight.

better yet...record one of the Juggies from the Man Show doing a flip on the trampoline and loop this in premiere with a text overlay saying "Flip My Disc!".

after initial rip/ifoedit...without "flip disc vob"

ATTEMPT #1

renamed flip-disc vob to vts_01_5.vob

opened ifoedit...make new vob's, make new ifo's, get vts sectors...flip-disc vob does not display when running video_ts.ifo file.

if i open the vts_01_4.vob (that now contains the flip-disc vob), the flip-disc part plays.

then i tried reripping the video_ts.ifo, video_ts.bup and the movies ifo file to the new directory. rename movie ifo (vts_04_0.ifo) to vts_01_0.ifo. opened ifoedit...make new vob's, make new ifo's, get vts sectors...same results...won't play the flip-disc section.

ATTEMPT #3
merge the final vob file with the new flip-disc vob. opened ifoedit...make new vob's, make new ifo's, REBUILD PTS (this is new thought), get vts sectors...still doesn't work.

convert original source to 16:9 format and render out of premiere using lsx-plug at 16:9, header on each gop, in avi format. import into dvdit-pe and create vob file. opened ifoedit...make new vob's, make new ifo's, get vts sectors...same results...still won't work.

i give up...unless derrow reads this and knows how to do it.

Just what I was worried about. That we would have a hard time getting the ifo's to recognize and accept our extra vob. I'll mess around tonight if I get a chance, but Derrow is probably going to be the best source of information here. Where did he go? Hopefully on a nice long weekend someplace fun. Certinly he deserves it for all of his hard work. Yes, Derrow, I'm sucking up, but I do think that you have contributed here a great deal. With the little bit of knowledge that I have, I also hope that I am contributing, even if it's answering some of the newbie questions while I get my DVD education.

if you want the image to be 16:9 why don't you use an image with 16:9 resolution something like 720x576 in pal case or 720x480 in ntsc case.

DVDxCopy does add a "Put in 2nd disc" at the end of the first so someone should find out how that is implemented.

I just took a look at the VIDEO_TS.VOB that was appended by DVDXCopy. They added ID3 which is the DVD Backup disclaimer and ID4 which is a "Please Insert Disc 2" still to the "This disc is copyrighted" bs that came with the DVD. One could easily perform the same task with a "Flip the Disc" still. Adding stuff the VOB's is a little above my level of knowledge right now but I'll get it! (actually haven't needed to, actually)

Hello to all,

Asked Derrow the same question (by e-mail some months ago).
Didn't get a answer but was able to do it.
The movie Starship Troopers contains a nice flip disc logo on the end of side one.
Ripped it and loaded the last VOB from side one into VOBEdit.
Demuxed it by Cell-ID and after that renamed the flip-sic logo to: VTS_0x-00x (don't know the number's out of my head), but it has to be the last one in the demuxed set.
Write down the first VOB-ID and then load the first demuxed Cell-ID in VOBedit.
Go to the tab EDIT and select: Join Cellvob files.
Remember to use the original VTS_0x_0x from the movie and let VOBEdit do it's work.
Copy it back to the movie and do a Get VTS Sector.
This should do the trick !

here's what i have done...successfully many times:

i extracted the "Intermission" vob file from Kelly's Heros. It came to 32 meg. It's just a black screen with white letters saying "Intermission".

Using smartripper, file mode, I rip HALF of the chapters to a "disc 1" folder.
Then I rip the remaining chapters to a folder called "disc 2".

I then copy the intermission vob file into "disc 1" folder. I rename the intermission vob file to vts_01_x.vob. making it the next vob in line. so, say the first half of the chapters ends at vts_01_4.vob, i rename the intermission file to vts_01_5.vob.

using ifoedit, i then strip streams in "disc 1" folder. the video_ts thinks there are 7 vob files, but it only has 5 vob files (including the renamed intermission vob file). ifoedit will make the intermission vob the last chapter in "disc 1" folder.

do the same for "disc 2" folder and you're all set.

I was wanting to make a black screen that says "please insert disc 2" at the end of chapter of disc 1. So when family/friends watch that movie they know when to swap discs. So how does a person do that? how do you create a VOB?
