Backups won't play on a Marantz 5005 Blu Ray player

Hi there, i am new to the world of backing up my blu rays (have previously been OK with dvd's) and i am having trouble. I am trying to back up my blu rays to an .mkv format so that I have them stored on the PC. Im using MakeMKV to backup the disk, then vidcoder to "shrink" these files down to a more manageable size. Ive set it to get around 8gb for a 1080p video.

I use DTS-HD passthrough as my audio (when i can) and the H264 encoder.

The trouble I am having is that I can get these files to play on various devices but not on one. I can get my files to play on my Sony S380 blu ray player no problem aswell as a Samsung 40" TV through the USB input. But i cannot whatsoever get them to work on a Marantz 5005 Blu Ray player.

I have tried everything i can think of to get them to work. Ive changed the MKV level, removed headers etc... but alas no luck. Ill post an example of one of my files below.

Are you trying USB or Disc? Is something other than FAT even supported? (Necessary for >4GB, not supported according to manual, though manuals are often wrong...) Tried a small file (only 100 MB) and without sound? Maybe it doesn't like DTS-HD or even DTS? Are the files listed, does an error message appear?

Hi thanks for the reply. I tried a small sample or a chapter was around 300mb off a USB stick. I tried both with and without sound and had no luck. The player is going through a Marantz 7005 reciever so i dont think sound is an issue. Its video mostly. At one point i did have a message saying "This video track is not supported" and it recognized the DTS audio. Its definitely something to do with the video track settings as other MKV files play flawlessly. Just the ones i have created seem to have problems.

Your Marantz player may be extremely strict as to what H.264 files it will play. Look at your encoding settings:

I also don't see the setting for number of slices. Perhaps your encoding frontend isn't correctly setting all the encoding settings to ensure bluray compatibility. The other devices you've tested on may have much more relaxed playback requirements. You may want to try running a small sample directly through the x264 command line tool with all the correct bluray settings and see if that works.

That does seem a little strange that blu ray isnt enabled. Im not exactly the best when it comes to using these command line tools (best I could do was run an mkclean program after lots of effort) would I navigate to a specific folder containing the H264 in command prompt and just click enter. Ill look around on the web to see if theres a guide but its definitely something to look at. Thanks

ive actually just looked at a few different videos that have worked in mediainfo and the same setting applies to them "bluray_compat=0" so I dont think its that. Ill post the settings im using in vidcoder to see if any are incorrect. Otherwise I may have to try with a different encoding program but I dont think that will make any difference

I Have played .mkv files with sizes much greater than that one example was 15gb and had DTS-HD audio so although it says that it has no trouble playing them. Ive created a new one to test using Ripbot and will try it on the upcoming weekend. Hopefully with better results than usual

Just in case anyone is wondering i used ripbot and it actually works. So im not sure what rip bot did that vid coder didnt but im happy. Thanks to all that helped
