View Full Version : 29.97 -> 23.97 What am I doing wrong?

I've been following the Doom9 guide for SBC using Nandub.
And as per the guide, I'm including the TMPGEnc step for IVTC to get the frame rate from 29.97->23.97. I've selected my 2 frames for every 5 and saved the project.
Everything seemed to be fine until I noticed that my final output (after 2 passes of encoding in Nandub) was 29.97fps.
So I went back to check what Nandub was getting for input from these preliminary steps and sure enough when I open my VFAPI file in Nandub and step through the input frame by frame, I count ~30 frames in a second.
What am I missing?
Thanks.

I know the NAN DUB guide recommends using Tmpeg for IVTC. TMPEG is the best tool for the job, but it gets pretty down and dirty. I would recommend using DVD2AVI and Gordon Knot together to create an AVS file.
I don't know if you have ever used Gordon Knot before but it is one of "The Best" encoding tools out there. Gordon Knot will convert The NTSC 29.976 fps file into a 23.976 fps FILM file. And it also does a pretty good job of removing the damaged frames. It's not perfect, but is "Very Good" at performing IVTC considering all you do it hit a button and it's done. And Gordon Knot also speeds up encoding by 20% because it doesn't convert the color format to RGB from YUV.
The VFAPI codec creates a fake avi which tells the program compressing it to convert the format to RGB which takes much longer to encode w/ NAN DUB (because Nan Dub is really the one doing all the work here).
Gordon Knot also allows you to crop outside of NAN DUB so you can run a "FAST RECOMPRESS" in NAN DUB (Which is guaranteed to be around 20% Faster). To read up on how to use Gordon Knot go to the Gordon Knot Guides (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main2.htm)

I will try Gordon Knot next rip to see how I like it, thanks.
As for my framerate issue, I figured it out last night.
The IVTC step in the Nandub guide didn't mention doing anything in TMPGEnc outside of the "Advanced" tab. I didn't realize that the framerate and resolution settings on the "Video" tab were also affecting the output.

Ok..
Ya that will do it. To perform IVTC w/ Gordon Knot all you need to do is activate the IVTC plug in when you save the .avs file in Gordon Knot. Then you open the .avs file right into Nan Dub.
