vd frameserver doesn't work any longer?!

i used vd 1.4.8's fs to serve cce 2.5 for a divx->svcd conversion yesterday. everything worked fine. today, vd's fs simply doesn't work! i tried 1.4.7, 1.4.8 and nandub. i un-/re-/installed AVIFile stuff, turned proxyon/-off - always the same error. it looks good till i try to open the "avi": "Cannot determine file type..." (i tried to open it with WMP, vd, CCE). i also tried different avis... the vd fs windows shows:

Non-A/V req: 0
# of frames served: 0
audio seg. del.: 0
Frameclient installed: AVIFile only

i'm using w2k sp2. i really do not understand this &%$*. it would be great if anybody could help me.

WMP plays uncompressed video fine. avisynth works, everything else too - except vd's frameserver!!! please help me :confused:
