Hi all,

I have a SD DVD with main menu from where you enter the movie.
The movie has 5 chapters.
Now, everything works great, but I have been told to do this.
When the user presses the Back chapter button to go to the beginning of the current and not to the previous one.

I burned the image and tried it to software DVD players and it goes to the previous one and the same image on a SONY DVD player where it goes to the beginning of the current
and only if pressed twice goes to the previous.
So, I am a bit confused and believe its a players' issue.

Can anyone help on that?
Is there a way to force it to go back to the beginning of the current?

Thanks!

Hello srfscenar,

It might be player issue, I believe every player have different playability issue.

E.g. Disc when checked on Sony DVD player & Philips Player has different playability.

In Philips player the movie always goes to First VTS First Title, were as Sony play fine, what I have experienced.

Thanks div007!

So you actually think its a players' issue.
That it cannot be forced from Scenarist, right?

Not excatly! I got the same issue while seleting the Titles option with the above Players, have tired using the First VTS First Title as one of the compare value like dummy for playback the disc with similar behaviour.

My feature IS on the 1st Title under the First VTS.
And I do not mean by selecting the titles, I mean when the user press the START button on the menu, plays the feature, go to the 3rd for e.g. chapter and then press the back chapter button on the remote. Got any idea?

I think every player acts differently. You can put some "limitations".
For example on the first cell of the PGC you can put a UOPs on "prev chapter". In this way you can go from chapter 2 to chapter 1, but you can't return, from chapter 1, to the beginning of the title.
Never tried but you can also try to put a Title1 in your VTS with a blank PGC that start the movie from beginning, and the feature on the Title2 (of the same VTS) with the feature. Maybe with the previous button pressed, the player go to the blank PGC (that restart the movie from the beginning).

Thanks mp3dom!

But what will that change if I am on chapter 5 and press the back button?
Is there a way somehow to "force" the dvd
so when the user presses the back chapter button on the remote to play the beginning of the current chapter.
For. e.g. if he is on ch5 and press the back bttn to go to the beginning of chap 5 and not the ch4 that some players do.

Any idea?

Do you think importing chapters from a csv file can cause problems?

As far as I know, there's no way to change how a player can act when a user press 'Previous' (or 'Next') on the remote. CSV is for automatic chapters import, but at the end it's the same as a manual insert.

Yeah, this is player specific. But it usually has a lot to do with how far into the chapter you are. If you are only a few seconds into the chapter, then the player will automatically go to the previous chapter on a skip back. If you are several minutes into the chapter, it should just jump to the beginning of the current chapter.

The practical reason for this is simply that it would make it impossible to chapter backwards if the player always just went to the head of the current chapter. If you are in Chapter 5, and hit back, you go the beginning of Chapter 5. If you hit back again, you go to the beginning of Chapter 5 (since it's already started playing a few frames). You'd be stuck there (some players only allow you to chapter one at a time and wait for video to start before allowing another chapter skip, so even 'button mashing' the back button wouldn't get you out of this loop). So there's a few-second 'pad' at the beginning of each chapter where the player will go the previous one on a back skip...

Thank you all for explaining this!

Dear srfscenar,

What Rik has explained is correct.

Like to share an experience of mine for SD authoring, client required authoring in such a way that both player should have same playability.

Clicking back space there was a difference in playability for player like Sony & Philips, While playback Sony search chapter’s & Philips search the Title’s.

I have used “First VTS first Title” as dummy Title with inserting a black frame for 15 frame, Giving Pre & Post command linking to Title 2 of the same VTS where I have inserted my Feature.

The conclusion worked fine by clicking Back skip it goes "First VTS First Title" reading the post command in Title 1 it linked to Title 2 & start from Feature beginning.

Thanks.
