View Full Version : Allowing people to post images without admin approval?

I was reading through threads and the typical problem that often comes up is that most images in old posts has been out of date or removed by their hotlinked site.
My point is to encourage people to post the images right on the forum so the images can stay for longer time, without admin approval on every upload.

without admin approval on every upload.
The potential risk for "misbehavior", either intentional or accidental, would be far too great...

what kind of "misbehaviors" can people do with images? I don't understand. I've been to a lots of forums, and never seen a spammer or bot who spam only inappropriate images.

I'm not sure when it comes to potential for misbehavior, I can see a distinction between images hosted on a third party site, which can already be posted immediately without mod approval, and images uploaded to the forum itself.

I would think that users with more than some threshold number of posts could be trusted and not need to have their attachments moderated.
In any case, I can't remember even one case of an inappropriate image in the mod queue.
The moderation does interrupt the experience for our members because they see a post, want to view the attachment and can't, and then they have to note somewhere to return to the thread. Or they never return and potential useful interaction is lost.

How would it be any greater than the situation now where anyone can link any image from a 3rd party site? In the 6+ years I've been reading this forum it really hasn't seemed to be an issue. And since that bypasses initial moderation that would seem to be quite a loophole for people to exploit if they wanted to do something bad.

Exactly.

There's still a difference between hosting something on your own server or hosting a link. I know the content industry likes to play fast and loose with that difference, but there still is one. With the usual exceptions to the rule, how long does it really take for an image upload to be approved?

I check for attachments several times per day and I suppose the other mods also check regularly.

I remember the last time was pretty long, can't remember exactly though. However, considering crazy lawyers, I guess it has to be this way.

In case an attachment/image is missed by the moderators, I'm pretty sure a mod will approve your attachment/image right away, if you ask kindly via PM.
But please don't ask three minutes after posting ;)

What is the law that could be problematic?
I'm just surprised as there are so many forums that allow you to post images without any problems - I find it so convenient to upload a picture to these forums and would love it if I could do the same to Doom9.

Perhaps this forum doesn't have much disk space available... On VideoHelp for example, the members can upload up to 50MB at a time, and there is no "need for approval".

just wanted to bring this issue up again, for the last two day i'm been uploading images to the forum, and to answer Doom9's question on how long it'll took. The last one that got approved took about 8 hours, and the one i uploaded 5 hours ago still didn't get approved yet.

Use an image host if you don't like the speed of attachment approval.

i thought i made my point pretty clear in the first post, regarding on the reason to upload to the forum vs upload to a image hosting site.

8 hours isn't an unreasonable amount of time to wait for an image upload to be approved. Staff here do so on their own free time.
If you really have such a problem where you want your images to be seen asap, upload them to the site, AND, link them via a third party host. When the image has been seen and approved by a staff member, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to then remove the third party link.
I realize that this takes slightly more effort on your part (less brain effort now that I've shown you an easy option), but don't you think, that in the long run, it's much better then whinging about things not happening as you want them to!

No more so than if it where hosted externally.
I can understand new users attachments being moderated (e.g. due to potential spamming).
But regular/trusted posters, with x amount of posts under their belt, surely wouldn't abuse it?
But a forum rule is a forum rule and unless it's changed, the only thing to do is live with it :)

Use an external hosting site that can be trusted to store your images. I've had stuff on imageshack.us at least as long as I've been a member here, and my images are still displayed in my oldest posts. Imageshack is free and as easy to use as uploading here as an attachment.
