Hi all,
I want to rip DVD's to HD:
What is the quickest DVD Drive to do this?
The Best Operating System?
The Best Ripping Tool?
:)

1.) DVD drives are usually labelled 10x or 12x and so forth - the higher the number, the faster it will read ;)
2.) ditto: win2k (I wouldn't use XP yet, IMO it's still a "public beta")
3.) try Smartripper for convenience, only if it doesn't work use VStrip

Howdy again :),

That's true ( of course ) for ordinary reading ( eg, loading a game ) but is not the case when ripping a DVD. The actual ripping speed is limited up to a point by the CPU you are using but also it depends on the drive. This has been my experience ( i have 6x pioneer that rips faster than 16x samsung on the same pc for same dvd, my fastest drive only rip at 6-10x and its a 16x ) and also i have gathered this from reading other posts.

They are both great apps - but vStrip can rip *any* DVD in theory whereas Smartripper unfortunately falls down occasionally. I have encoded the same movie four times in a row before and each time nandub crashed on 99% during the second pass - it drove me bloody nuts trying to figure out what it was. Problem solved by ripping using vStrip to rip the DVD. IMO its *very* worthwhile to learn to use vStrip - it's really not *that* newbie unfriendly to be honest.
djbasics, you may want to check out Doom9's DVD-ripper comparison at the website for more info if you have not done so already.
XP - hows that song go... ? "Don't... don't... don't believe da hype!"

@UHT - are there (m)any functions that are much better in XP than in Win2k? Only "not having any problems and the same speed as in Win2k" in XP isn't exactly a reason to update ;)

Not really - the whole gui looks a lot nicer but its pretty cosmetic if your a reasonably able user already. It comes with alot of extra apps that haven't really impressed me - theres just better alternatives released by other companies. You can of course tweak the whole interface back to 2000 style.
I'd say if you're comfortable with windows 2000 theres no reason to do the upgrade ( well, maybe unless ur into spoofing ppl,but thats another story ) - plus i keep seeing those XP letters in thread titles - seems some ppl are having problems with it..... problems with 2000 in combination with other apps have been ironed out already since it is more mature. Just my 2 pesoes.
