View Full Version : @jdobbs Your SONY 360 - Additional anomaly?

I noted some very unusual behavior by my6 SONY 360 and/or the "The Artist" Blu-ray disc.
In the way of background, my SONY 360 was purchased 3 or more years ago and has never been connected to the Internet. The firmware has never been updated, so that for original, unripped discs, the highest playable AACS has remained at 9.
Yesterday, the female family members and friends were sooooo anxious to see "The Artist" (a SONY and Weinstein Brothers title) that I had to prove to them that the original Blu-ray disc (like so many original discs before this) would not play.
Lo and behold, instead of generating the "updated firmware needed" message, the original AACS26 disc loaded and played perfectly!
Have you had similar experiences? Is SONY "up to something"?
**EDIT** The same thing just happened with "The Flowers of War". It too is an AACS 26 blu-ray disc and yet it plays on my "up to ACS 9" SONY BDP S360.

I have the 560 version, same player only it has analog audio out. I can play any new releases that I want, including Wrath Of The Titans and Red Tails. Like yours it has never seen the internet. I believe I did disable the firmware warning in the settings. If you need or want me to confirm this let me know. Sorry for taking so long to reply but I had to wait my five days.

@gonca
Hi! and thanks for responding.
However, the reason this ability to play discs with AACS keys greater than "9" is mysterious is because my SONY 360 was not previously able to do so. It previously would generate a message advising the user to go to the studio's website and download a firmware update...

I made a slight mistake in my post. I didn't disable the firmware update settings as such. I turned off the software update notification in system settings. The default is on. I am not 100% sure but I believe that even without a connection it still brings up the warning because the update can be done with a burnt disc or usb stick. Check if this setting is now in the off selection. In short, it is possible that it wasn't the 360's capabilities that prevented you from watching the movies, but rather it was the warning screen itself that prevented the movie from loading.

I've seen updates for the PS3 packaged in some Blurays in the past. I wonder if something like this may have occured in your player.

Hi!
Huh? I'm not using/don't have a PS3. I rather doubt that a PS3-specific update would have any effect on a standalone player (SONY brand or other)...

Have you checked again the firmware version of your player? ;) Maybe some magic things happened ....

I know that you are not using a PS3, I just knew that there have been updates to the PS3 sent out on Bluray disks, and considering you are using a Sony Bluray player, it was just a hypothesis as to how your AACS support increased.
Frankly, it's a bit unlikely, but not completely outside the realm of possibility.

Off topic, but a bit like the wii needing an update before it will play a newer game. You tell people never to update but somebody will when your not looking
Has anybody already tried playing those discs and 'forgot' they just said 'ok' to everything which popped up on screen

Interesting thought, but other than myself, no one has access to this specific player. I use it ONLY for testing - and it's not connected to the Internet...

But have you checked the FW version?

Further to my post, my firmware version is 010 which was released in early 2010. This is the original firmware on the player at the time of purchase.

If you own or can obtain a recent original, commercial Blu-ray disc containing an AACS/MKB that is perhaps equal to or greater than 26, it would be good to know if your 360 can also "mysteriously" play it directly, without having to rip it...

I picked up Silent House, a new release original, commercial blu-ray disc. Put it in my computer so anydvdHD could give me the information needed. I then put it in my sony 560 and it played fine. I selected english version, I live in Canada, then root menu, then movie. I went thru the first 20 minutes of the movie with no issues. What is the software version in your sony player.
Forgot to mention that this movie is MKB version 30.

@goncaI then put it in my sony 560 and it played fine.Sorry, I guess I overlooked this difference in your initial post. I don't know that comparisons of the behavior of two different models is valid.
Since it seems that no one with a SONY 360 has experienced the same changed behavior (No settings have been changed since the day I plugged it in), I'll put this question to sleep.
Thanks...

I believe that the 360 and 560 use the same firmware. Only difference in the two models is the analog audio out.

Sorry for the slow response. I packed my S360 away a month or two ago. I'll have to get it out and try "The Artist".
