"w/analysis" will do two passes.

1) one pass to analyze the data. (to accurately distribute different compression algorithms during the second pass; complex scenes will get more bitrate while simple scenes will not get more bitrate than needed.)
2) final pass to write the data to file.

Sorry, but Sparktank's answer is WRONG.

For a complete understanding it helps if you know the differences between VBR and CBR (and ABR). In VBR mode you can only specify a desired quality, but you have no control over the size of the output. To achieve a desired target size you will need two passes.

But this takes twice as long, so some clever people came up with a solution like this: The first analysis pass only analyzes a small percentage of the input file which will be a lot faster, but the price is that the analysis result will not be totally accurate. So depending on the source characteristics and on the percentage value of the analysis pass you will end up with a certain amount of undersizing or oversizing. But in many cases this is something you can live with.

And this is exactly the method which DVD-RB uses when you specify "One Pass VBR w/ analysis".
