View Full Version : MPC-HC, why so slow and laggy?

I've been using MPC-HC for as long as I can remember as my standard video player. I accidentally used Windows Media Player on my Windows 7 machine to open a video, and oh my is it a much better experience than MPC-HC. Video seeking is much faster, and the first few seconds does not lag. I just installed a GT 520, and MPC-HC became unbearably laggy. Switching to full screen freezes my computer for 5 seconds, same as exiting. Video is jerky. With Windows Media Player, everything just works, and works beautifully with no lag. I would completely ditch MPC-HC if WMP can load external subtitles.

I must be doing something wrong, otherwise MPC-HC would not be so popular.

I have the latest ffdshow installed. MPC-HC is on EVR custom preset with ffdshow audio decoder as the preferred audio decoder. Video is DXVA'd and audio is bitstreamed.

My system specs are a AMD 630, 3GB RAM, HD 4200 (before I got my GT 520), GT 520.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You say that all this happened after you changed the graphics card so maybe try different drivers and also try default nvidia control panel settings.

There recently was another case of slow-and-laggyness reported on this board. If it's a renderer problem, I'd be happy to help out a bit and provide support. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1578134#post1578134

Also please don't forget ehh it's using MF not DS and has it's own optimized Workflow (nothing interferes) and all the 3rd parties have their components for it as soon as you install their drivers inced to taking over on their Hardware.

Re-installing the driver or disabling VSync will most likely solve the problem.

Why would anyone in their right mind disable VSync?

The 'VSync' functions in the trunk build are very counter-productive if you have either desktop composition or D3D fullscreen enabled. These modes can VSync on their own. On top of that, modern frame-time schedulers don't flush the rendering instruction pipeline like the the 'VSync' functions do, but allow queued presenting of frames from a buffer. In my version of the renderer the 'VSync' functions were grouped together into "Alternative VSync" and it is only available when neither desktop composition nor D3D fullscreen are enabled. Queued present modes are available under the "Alternative Scheduler" and "Frame Interpolator" functions.

Dont forget Adaptive VSync by Nvidia i wonder what that would have a effect on MPC-HC if someone forces it ;)

I'll try that out tomorrow. Thank you. However I have returned the GT 520, and right now I'm just interested in getting seeking to be instantaneous like in WMP.

What is MF and DS?

Re-installing the driver or disabling VSync will most likely solve the problem.

Which driver are you referring to?
