View Full Version : Another Resizing filter question.

I've read that GKNOT recomends a resizing filter. What does it base this recommendation on and does it have a reflection on the bitrate it suggests for DivX 4? If I choose a different (better) resize filter do I need to re-adjust the bitrate? I am currently using GKnot along with DivX4log. The reason I'm asking is because GKnot recommended Neutral Bicubic for Toy Story and Neutral Bicubic for Toy Story 2. It seems like it should have recommended the same resize filter for both movies. The first one turned out much better looking and I'll use Bicubic Neutral if I get that good of a quality from it.

Hi,
I'm not sure, but I think that Gordianknot recommends a resize filter based on the framerate....don't quote me, read this somewhere.
As far as preferences, think of them as a scale, going from soft/blurry to sharp/blocky. Obviously, bilinear will give you the softest resize, and I use this on most 1cd rips. The bicubics will give you more degrees of sharp edges and blockiness, but I usually use Neutral or soft on most 2cd rips that are bright.
Usually I will only use sharp on a very dark, blurry movie, like Unbreakable or the Matrix. The dark scenes on this tend to phase out the blocks, and the sharp edges against the dark show up better.
Certain movies tend to compress better with different filters. Do a compressibility check using different filters (usually bilinear and one other one), check which will give you higher percentage.

When we don't resize the movie (rip with DVD resolution and just crop) wich filter is better?
I have made my first Gordian Knot DVD Rip (before i use XMpeg) of the movie Patriot and i use the Neutral bicubic. The result is excelent!

the filter selection is based on the bits/pixel*frame value... what you take is up to you eventually.. I always use neutral bicubic no matter what gknot sets the filter to

if you don't resize the movie you will have a wrong aspect ratio.
please read doom9's ar-explained.

Yeah, neutral bicubic is giving me the best results, and I read that GKnot makes its recommendation based on the bitrate (I guess there's no way for the program to actually tell what looks best.) Thanks

@ uht
I thought you had to select a resize filter in Gknot....I'm not at my home computer so I can't make sure, but I thought you had to choose Bilinear or one of the Bicubics....
Am I wrong?

GKnot selects a resize filter based on the bitrate it suggests in the bitrate window. The only time I've seen it select neutral bicubic was when I was encoding a movie less than an hour and a half long and the bitrate was over 1000kBps. You can always manually select a filter if you don't like the one GKnot suggests. I have been select bicubic lately, I've noticed a drastic difference in quality especially when viewing the movie full screen and in movies under 90 minutes. (The Sopranos episodes are a good example because they are only an hour long) I hardly ever do 2 cd rips unless the movie without the credits is over 2 hours long. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It seem like the more I learn about movie encoding, the more there is to know.

I certainly won't correct you on that one. :D
