Can't get a satisfying image result out of this DVD

Hi,

I'm trying to encode with MeGui a DVD (Metallica Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge, Seattle DVD) but I can't get a satisfaying image. The video is interlaced and I let MeGui decide which deinterlacing method is the best. It selected Yadif.

As you can see, many details are lost and it's even worse when the video is playing. I never had any problem with encoding movies but it's the first time I'm encoding an interlaced video.

What settings whould I change to get a result closer to the original? A higher bitrate? Another deinterlace method?

why 2-pass??? Are you aiming for 700MB or what???

Forget about 2-pass and switch finally to Constant Quality Mode.

I'm aiming for a 1,5GB file. Looks like I have no control on the produced file size when using the Constant Quality Mode. I'll try it to see how it does on this DVD.

That's better but I should end up with a 3GB file.

Also in every case, the picture is encoded brighter!

--crf 21 or 22 might get you a smaller file size

Well, if you're aiming for file size then 2 pass is the way to go.
You might try a different deinterlacer like QTGMC that should give better deinterlacing quality and a little denoising would be good, too.

Compression-wise, Yadif is one of the worst deinterlacers, anyway. Surely QTGMC is (much) slower, but then, it gives better quality at less bitrate. (Ballpark figures: 20% to 30% smaller bitrate at single framerate, 40% to 50% smaller bitrate at double framerate [bob mode] ).

The concerts are generally recorded as interlaced. Again, as a rule of thumb, the same concerts feature a low quality image, in order to squeeze 2h or more in a better audio quality (because this is the reason why one buys it).

The starting quality and the process are not the best one can start with. In order to get a good video quality you need to add a lot of handworking, more bitrate than eg ToyStory and to pick up a motion compensated deinterlacer, as Didée suggested.
