View Full Version : FTTH IPTV provider with contrast problem - Can see, but can't measure!

Please have a look at these MPEG-2 Transport Stream capture files:

File1.ts is captured from FTTH IPTV provider X
File2.ts is captured from FTTH IPTV provider Y

If you compare them very closely you will notice there is something wrong with the contrast of provider Y.

I think IPTV Headend of provider Y is not performing up to specs.
The problem is that I just can't measure it!
I did bitrate measurements, PCR / DTS / PTS measurements and frame by frame comparisons with both MPEG-2 Transport Stream capture files.
The results were indentical.

This is really strange as there ARE contrast differences like you can see when playing the video.

Are there any other measurements that I should do?
What programs do you recommend to measure the contrast ratio of a video file?

The contrast is the same you're trppin'.
You need dgdec nv gpu (not free and for nvidia cards) it can open .ts streams (sd/hd) then you analyse with avisynth (with avspmod)

example:

You must A/B them a few times with the first seconds of the video. Then you should see there is a difference. It's very hard to see but it is there.

The histograms of both videos are spot-on identical. There is no difference.

In case you have both videos opened at the same time, perhaps there is an issue with the video renderer. When using Hardware Overlay or hardware based rendering, there might be HW restrictions so that the two players cannot use the same settings, and one renderer is switching to software rendering.

Look at the frame size. Same frame, different size!

The look the same to me, both in encoded frame size (according to ffdshow's osd) and contrast (look at the waveform). As mentioned above, you probably have a playback issue . If there is a difference, it's negligible
