There are many great 8-bit lossless codecs, but options are limited in 4:4:4 10-bit land, particularly VFW. (Edit: I now realize that the thread title is misleading - this discussion is not just restricted to VFW encoders) Here are my limited findings for you to add to.

Let's assume applications like VirtualDub, Vegas, Premiere, Speedgrade, Edius, etc and the best ways to get out the highest quality as-close-to-lossless-as-possible.

The native codecs in many of these apps aren't all that great. Yes, 10-bit DPX and Uncompressed AVI are always an option, but the file sizes aren't very appealing. FFV1 can get you to 10-bit, but not without subsampling and generally being slow. OpenEXR PIZ compression is pretty cool, but it isn't broadly supported across the above apps.

Another option is X264 444 10-bit lossless. I haven't quite figured out a way to get this to encode from the above software, x264vfw seems to be no good. Any ideas? Debugmode to Hybrid works but it is really slow.

At this point, a true lossless, 10-bit, 4:4:4 seems like a pipe-dream. So let's move on to near-lossless. I have found two VFW options here - Cineform and HQX. Unfortunately, neither are free solutions (Cineform is free upto 4:2:2), but I tested the trials. I may be wrong, but in both cases these supposedly 10-bit codecs only encode 8-bit (HQX works OK in Edius only). On to the Quicktime side, the new DNxHD 444 actually seems to work pretty well, but I am generally averse to MOV/Quicktime and it's unpredictable gamma shifts, poor performance, etc. Plus it is more lossy than Cineform or HQX.

I am sure I am missing something along the way. So far, in the end it seems like we are back to Uncompressed. What are the best options, then? What encoders would guarantee a 10-bit 4:4:4 output out of these above mentioned type of software? I know DPX works pretty well across the board (provided disk I/O is up to it). But I am just looking for a better solution!

Yes, I know, this is where you would say "this is not worth the trouble, 8-bit or 4:2:2 are 'visually lossless' anyway!". But that's besides the point, I am just one of those loonies who freak out when that 1 byte goes missing!:D

Maybe someone could compile a 10bit build of x264 VFW?

The latest versions of Virtualdub can pass the video frames to a command line encoder so you might wanna try and see if you can use x264.

You are not missing anything- maybe Sheer codec, but this is old/dead and MOV only.

Cineform has the best support and easiest workflow to preserve 10bit. There is new version coming soon with even better quality, specially for relatively easy sources.
Canopus HQX is also a great/fast codec and will be available for free soon (including MAC version), but if GV won't change it than there won't be support for 10bit outside Edius. It's also 4:2:2 only. I tried to convince them to add v210 input in/out pin, so it can be used outside Edius and keep 10bit, but no luck up to now. 10bit support outside Edius may be included within new/free release- I hope. I also tried to convince them to make Canopus Lossless 10bit, but I don't think it will happen :(
There is also small possibility that Cineform will have 100% lossless mode soon :)

There is no 4:2:2/10bit good lossless codec out there neither 4:4:4 one :(

HQX outside Edius is always 8bit!

Cineform does support 10bit input data (at least in form of v210- maybe also v410 and other formats) and it also has v210 and other high bit depth output pins in directshow modules, so there is full support for 8bit+ precision.

Cineform is well supported in all NLEs, AE, grading tools etc. with full high depth precision.
It has been also submitted to SMPTE standardization under VC-5 name.

You can for example convert v210 AVI/QT to CF using VirtualDub with proper ColorDepth setting in Vdub.

Thanks kolak, much appreciated. Interesting information regarding Cineform, but isn't v210 4:2:2 though? Is there any way documentation to which software support 10-bit for Cineform and which don't?

What about Cineform MOV? Does that encode 8-bit or 10-bit?

CF works in 10bit in almost every software- Premiere, Vegas, AE, Resolve, Eyeon Fusion (and almost all grading VFX, grading tools), Vegas, also I think in Avid through AMA link. It's has as good support as v210 if not better and this applies to AVI and MOV.

v210 is 4:2:2 10bit uncompressed, but CF decoder has also 4:4:4 10bit output pins.
CF also supports 12bit 4:4:4 and RAW encoding with real time debayering. SDK itself offers even more- it's powerful technology.
