bascily im wondering what the best way to implment one for use with comic readers and Media players would be, i have an old win fast contorller here with a recever of sorts that plugs in to the card tho i no longer have the card in my PC and have never used the remote i do how ever have a sixaixs that i am going to replace with a daulshock 3 soon- its hooked up to the PC and running off motionjoy so yea just wondering how to go about this

remote control but like wise a wireless gamepad like my preexsiting ps3 game pad is fine , that DIY you posted looks simple enough but i lack any sort of experience and would much rather rig up somthing via blutooth using somthing i already have .....

You can use ps3 controllers on your pc with bluetooth. I know there is some software floating about to do this. I was gonna write a winlirc plugin, but my pc doesn't have bluetooth I don't think. And I don't own a ps3 :p

currently iv got it running off a USB cable via motionjoy , dongles are like $2 anyway but yea just clueless on how to go about this , is there a forum you could recommend ?

a plugin would be a apprticted tho - any idea on how to actviate it globally ? ie mouse movements etc

I'm running a PS3 Blu-ray remote on my Win7 64bit.

I use eventghost to control it, but there are two problems:
1. Eventghost PS3 remote driver is flakey under Win7 64bit and requires restart every day (after 24h it takes up 100% CPU and upto 2gb RAM due to memory leaks)
2. The remote never goes into sleep mode, which means the battery runs out after 2-6 days (I use rechargable AA bats).

The state of the PC-Remote industry is rather sad.
Frankly, I would create a simple generic remote of my own if I had the funding/help on such a project.

All said, this problem is slowly going away as you can use a smart phone to control many apps (including Zoom Player).

Smartphones are awful remotes. You need to start some app, usually the screen locks when you don't use it for a while, its awful.

I have a Logitech Harmony and just have it configured as a default MCE Remote. Doesn't need any special software installed on Windows and works just beautifully.
If you don't need the multi-purpose remote, any default MCE remote can do, and those can be gotten for rather cheap.

This is why .NET was invented, to rescue n00b programmers for leaking cataclysms lol. You are right about remotes being a mess. Under windows anyway theres so many different possible 'standards'. Even the cheap ones you buy can send multiple different kinds of key press, with just 1 button press on a remote. A headache indeed.

Winlirc and lirc are about the closest thing there is to a standard, for hardware that can provide access to the raw signal anyway.

The reason I don't like the cheap MCE remotes is that they are all based on IR and I prefer RF remotes, especially because I use CFL lighting and a Plasma TV which interferes with IR remotes (I have an MCE remote and it's very annoying).
Not to mention that you need to hack the registry if you want the remote to use only HID and not keyboard input.

The best/easiest remote I owned was the SnapStream Firefly. It's supported by Girder, Eventghost and probably a few others as well.
It supplies a key-down & release event, which prevents double action on a single click (the PS3 remote does this as well).

And it's RF! The only issue is, because it's RF, when I tried to order one, it was confiscated by customs and I had to bring them a report that the RF it uses doesn't interfere with other devices (the report and time cost more than the remote itself).
But that's my silly country. For everyone else, I would recommend the SnapStream FireFly as a good RF remote that can be used with any application and doesn't require keyboard focus.
