Hello

I'm totally new at this, and need some recommendation.

As a test, I shot a conference with a camcorder that saved the file as .MOV (MPEG-PS = MPEG 224 + AC-3) and also recorded the sound with an independent digital recorder that saved the file as WAV.

So I need to remove the soundtrack from the MOV file, insert the WAV, and try to sync both.

Someone recommended Sony's Movie Studio HD for this, but when I load the file, it complains that no codec is available. This is on a brand new Windows7 laptop, so that makes sense (although I would have expected Sony to install codecs for something as common as MPGE(2), though).

Someone else recommended that I install QuickTime, but before I go ahead, could someone tell me what reputable codec packs I should install for editing video?

K-Lite? CCCP? Other?

Thank you.

I hate hate hate QuickTime. The way Apple handles its software ought to be flagged as adware/spyware in my opinion.

You can give QT Lite a try instead. It's my personal favorite for achieving QuickTime playback minus all of the bloat.

When it comes to codec packs, the general consensus among A/V gurus is to avoid them, but of course not everyone is a guru. In my opinion, codec packs are fine for anyone not intending to go hardcore into transcoding. CCCP had always been my go to pack back when I was using codec packs. I also liked Shark007's codec. It has more features and manual control, but it's also a bit rougher around the edges.

Exactly what it would take to get Sony's Movie Studio HD to support MOVs, I have no idea. QT Lite might be all you need. CCCP or Shark007 could do the trick as well, and they'll give you playback support for pretty much every file format in case you want to watch anything in the future.

That's my two-cents. Other more knowledgeable people might have better advice.
